DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Eco Sanctuary 48

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence

INSPIRATION:
By reimagining a gentleman's club from the UK, this chic residential design features a beautiful blend of vintage and contemporary. It also explores the symbiotic relationship of light and shadow to fulfill the aesthetic and functional needs of modern Malaysians. Glass panels and steel frames are incorporated to provide soothing illuminations while brick, wood and cement surfaces evoke a rustic quality, further refined with a cool urban colour scheme and clean straight lines.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This semi-detached house is updated with a modern tropical concept that emphasizes a warm, laid-back, resort-like ambiance. While capturing the tastefully exquisite style of the gentleman's club, the concept has been polished with some contemporary touches such as full-length glass panels and smooth, glossy finishes. Fashioned with sleek, black French blinds, the interior is instantly elevated with a touch of sophistication. Aside from the aesthetics, this design stands out for its multifaceted room designs to cater to the family's needs: to relax and to entertain.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In this design, the pavilion is a challenge to traditional layouts, which provide both aesthetical and functional values. In an attempt to open the space up, certain non-structural walls have been removed to make way for an open layout. Embracing its multifaceted purpose, the pavilion offers natural light and can be incorporated into the layout as a means of expanding visual boundaries beyond the existing space. It also doubles as a lounging bar area for entertaining guests.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Completed in 2019, this project is located in the quaint, new neighbourhood in Selangor, Malaysia.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In order to overcome the limited amount of space, the boundaries between outdoor and indoor spaces are blurred to create spacious and comfortable rooms. Non-structural walls were removed to create an open space layout, large glass panels were installed strategically to illuminate the interior with natural light. Natural materials such as brick, wood, steel and cement surfaces evoke a rustic quality while cool urban hues complete this classy look.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
This project is a new unit from the newly developed housing project in an upcoming township. Aside from aesthetics and functionality, air ventilation is another important component of the new design. The existing kitchen wall was removed to create an open and spacious layout to improve airflow. As a solution, hidden storage solutions have been added without compromising the connectivity between spaces.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
An in-depth research has been conducted on finding the ideal concept to elevate the existing space without compromising on style and practicality. The research led to the discovery of the gentleman's club and its elegant qualities were the perfect solution to a home design that doubles as a space to unwind as well as a luxurious entertaining space. The use of natural light is studied and regulated with French blinds to cast calming shadows in the interior, giving the rooms a leisurely ambience.

CHALLENGE:
Inspired by the classic gentleman's club, much thought has been put into bringing the classy look into the 21st century by balancing the design with delicate contemporary features. Due to the client's love for entertaining guests, this design needs to be presentable visually, which has to be factored into the limited space of the residence.
