Interview with CHIA-HUI LIEN at Sunday 27th of January 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CL: The f Huaxia forefathers of China invented the calendar thousands of years ago. They divided the year into 24 solar terms, which guided early farmers on how to work the field. Using the idea of cyclic time low, font design breaks down the strokes in radicals through an expression of lines. Spatial expressions of the empty and the solid are then put on display. A specific shade of green was chosen to symbolize the vigor of the land.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CL: I want to interpret the form of the changing seasons in the form of typography.I want to interpret the form of the changing seasons in the form of typography.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CL: I want to promote the aesthetic application of Chinese Chinese character design.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CL: Half a year.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CL: This inspiration is my personal free creation, mainly because I am Chinese, I want to promote Chinese character culture design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CL: Produce your own print.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CL: Because I love design.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CL: From the life, I can get a lot of creative inspiration, apply to my design work.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CL: The general public is my target customer.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CL: The Chinese farmer's almanac recorded climate patterns based on seasonal changes. Every rotation, turn and placement from the lines and structures of Chinese characters symbolizes the change between "action" and "stillness" under the laws of the world. The crafting of dot, line and plane patterns based on solar terms is an interpretation from the sentimental pens of font creators.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CL: The f Huaxia forefathers of China invented the calendar thousands of years ago. They divided the year into 24 solar terms. So I named the work with 24 solar terms.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CL: Adobe Illustrator . pencil and paper.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CL: Using the idea of cyclic time low, font design breaks down the strokes in radicals through an expression of lines. Spatial expressions of the empty and the solid are then put on display. A specific shade of green was chosen to symbolize the vigor of the land.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CL: This is my personal design.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CL: Technology can bring the work to a complete presentation.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CL: Before I made this work, I spent a lot of time studying the meaning of Chinese peasant calendar -24 solar terms and the design of Chinese characters.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CL: In the design process, it is a challenge to pay attention to the changes and aesthetics of the Chinese character font design, and to combine the 24 solar climate changes.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CL: After winning the A Design International Design Award last year, I want to continue to create, and I am sure that the A Design International Design Award is a competition to promote works. It is also an international competition that I love very much.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CL: Through this competition, I learned a lot of details that need attention in design and enjoyed the excellent design works of many other designers.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
