Home > Winners > Design #68709 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Idan Herbet (IH) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Idan Herbet by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Herbet here.

Interview with Idan Herbet at Sunday 9th of June 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
IH: The inspiration for the project comes from a technology that intrigued me and attracted me to dig in - the contraction and expansion of a dibble gypsum. I went into a thorough study and learned to control the technique with iron pipes in which I performed subtractions and reinforcements in specific places .This is how I learned to master the technique and through it I achieved dozens of interesting forms which technology allows , one of which led me to the format that I decided to adapt to the portable gas stove .Which opens and closes by contraction . This principle enabled me to reach format innovation, and to translate the technology to the accuracy the portable gas stove needs in the field as well as for ideal cooking conditions

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
IH: I wanted to go out to the product through technology. I had the faith and the confidence to explore and deepen a path that intrigued me and that I felt had a direction for curious results. With this method, I succeeded in expressing technological innovation and a product with structural strength and durability to external conditions, which led to the use of innovative , morphological and format portable gas stove

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
IH: The next step I am already working on vigorously, is to bring this product to the market .I believe in it and have the motivation to push it forward .My hope is that everyone will be able to acquire such an object, the user will be able to stop in the middle of his daily routine and enjoy the way through its use.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
IH: This project took three consecutive months , 3 months that felt like a year .I got into a whirlpool of time , I got up and slept this project every day .Not in the bad sense - I simply devoted myself and enjoyed delving into what the day will bring .

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
IH: This design came under the " metal project " in undergraduate studies in industrial design at HIT - Holon Institute of Technology .

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
IH: The desire at the moment is to produce by myself .But with some limitations at the moment. if an investor / company that really connected to the project would come , I would be happy to discuss additional options . I can say that I have all the motivation to make it happen in the best possible way

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
IH: A combination of curiosity , faith , and security .If not for each of these variables, the result would have looked different .

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
IH: First of all, my source of inspiration for the " dibble gypsum " product was the one that gave the flexible feasibility of a mechanism that opens and closes. . Afterwards, the rest of the portable gas stoves in the market are what led me to significant conclusions that I was smart to implement . Another influence is my lecturer " Itay Potash " who connected to my work and pushed me forward .

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
IH: The main customer is a person who appreciates design and life itself. Someone who knows how to stop once in a while , make himself a good coffee with the portable gas stove , enjoy the moment , and appreciate our time on Earth .

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
IH: There are gas stoves and we know a lot about the market .Large ones , small ones , light ones ...And so on … The main design of this portable gas stove is the use of its technology, which gives it a reliable, robust and prestigious look .Which can deal with all the outdoors changing conditions and is easy to store and use - opening and closing in one simple operation .

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
IH: Herbet is my last name .The origin of the name Herbet is work in Yiddish .The work on this project and the project itself is 150 percent me .All the smallest details in the portable gas stove are smart solutions that have resulted from great challenges in the project .So I felt comfortable giving this project my name .

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
IH: There is no substitute for common sense , first of all with the head and the hands - It is the bes tools. A lot of workshop hours , sketches , mockups , and then simulations and extraction of files for production in SolidWorks

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
IH: The opening and closing mechanism of the portable gas stove is the one that dictates all the formats of the stove and the one that combines all the aspects of the stove itself that allow it to exist.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
IH: Of course, I consulted a lot and drew information from anyone I could .Gas and fire professionals .Specialists in outdoor metal , metal processing and professor of morphology .

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
IH: The technology in this design is the central part of the product .Because I went to this project through the technology which was a constant variable throughout the project .

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
IH: This design is the result of 100 percent research . Technological research - monitoring the occurrence of the dibble gypsum's (contraction and expansion) what allows it? And examining various types. Material research - the translation of technology into metal and testing the feasibility of the types of axes , stretching the boundaries of the material ) metal , pipes ( by various manipulations . Product research - market survey , examination of existing types of gas stoves and the study of their advantages and disadvantages .

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
IH: The project met a host of challenges .Like a puzzle and solutions that require patience , creativity and a lot of feasibility testing . The main challenge was to translate the contraction and expansion of the metal into a system of axes that would enable unlimited opening and closing . The next challenge was to translate the properties of the portable burner and durability to outdoor conditions into the system I created . Another challenge was wanting to make the locking system open so that it would not collapse during use . Another challenge was to make it all for easy use , with one simple action and maintain user convenience.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
IH: A lecturer in my studies , who connected to my way and the final product I created , turned to me and told me that there is a lot of content and it is a product that should be sent to a design competition .

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
IH: I learned a lot about myself during this project .Mainly about my own passion and my dedication to design . Along the way I realized how important it is to follow a spark of curiosity and devote myself to the path . I learned not to be afraid or to be deterred where I am less knowledgeable or unfamiliar - on the contrary, take advantage of the situation , to be wise and add more tools to the toolbox .

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
IH: With your permission, I would like to appeal to the readership and ask that if I have succeeded in arousing motivation , inspiration , insight or emotion in any person, I would be happy to hear about it, and you can contact me Through social networks, as : @idanherbet @Studio_herbet Thank you .

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
