Oh Chair: Redefining Retro-Futuristic Lounge Seating
The Oh Chair, designed by Ao Zhou, is a modern reinterpretation of the iconic retro-futuristic egg chair, capturing the essence of cutting-edge technology and sustainable design. Inspired by the lightness and organic fluidity of drifting paper, the chair's welded metal tubes pay homage to the classic paperclip, while seamlessly blending diversity, vitality, humanity, and urban elements.

Incorporating AIGC in the creation process, the Oh Chair showcases the designers' perspective on Artificial Intelligence, co-piloting with an open mind and careful consideration, embracing progress while being mindful of the surrounding context.

Constructed with 100% recyclable polyethylene, fabric, and stainless steel, the Oh Chair stands at 706mm x 1316mm x 1356mm, offering a unique and sustainable seating experience.

The design process involved the use of Blender, Figma, Photoshop, and AIGC, while the project commenced in Munich in October 2023 and concluded in January 2024 in Munich and Los Angeles.

The project delved into the impact of generative design on the design process, exploring how it accelerates early-stage exploration with conversational response and aids in the final visualization. The research revealed that generative AI is a valuable tool for visualizing designer vision with lightning speed and liberating design from the heavy lifting of self-double by accelerating the brainstorming process.

One of the significant challenges faced during the project was training the AI model, involving thousands of iterations and ideations to reflect the general aesthetic of the 1920s-1930s and 1950s-1960s while exploring new materials, construction techniques, and ergonomic solutions.
