Wayang Golek: Blending Tradition with Modern Design
The "Wayang Golek" project, by Mengyao GUO, is a fusion of traditional Indonesian puppetry with modern graphic design, aiming to rekindle appreciation for this cultural gem, especially among younger audiences. The project utilizes Adobe Illustrator for precision and control in crafting vector graphics, color blocking, and detailed pattern design, preserving the puppet's unique attributes while encapsulating the cultural richness of traditional Indonesian art.

As digital creations, the "Wayang Golek" series offers scale, color adjustments, and design modification flexibility, ensuring high-resolution output for any size without losing quality. The digital format also ensures easy sharing and display across various platforms and devices, improving accessibility and interaction.

The project started and finished in the summer of 2022 and was exhibited in 2022 West Java. Cultural and design research was conducted, involving a literature review, visual analysis of traditional Indonesian art, and a study of Wayang Golek's performances. The positive feedback affirmed the project's success in making Wayang Golek more relatable to a modern audience.

The most challenging part of the "Wayang Golek" project was merging traditional Indonesian art with contemporary graphic design while maintaining cultural integrity. Balancing the historical and social perspectives of Wayang Golek with modern aesthetics required careful research and thoughtful design choices. Using Adobe Illustrator allowed for versatility, providing the designs maintained their vibrancy and detail across platforms.

About Mengyao GUO
Guo Mengyao is an award-winning artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and researcher with a fine art and visual communication background. Her works have been widely included in several worldwide exhibits, and she is an assistant professor at Shenzhen International School of Design, Harbin Institute of Technology. The "Wayang Golek" project was awarded Iron in A' Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design Award in 2024.
