#530: What are your plans to make the World Design Ratings better?
There are a few potential ways that we are working on to make the World Design Ratings more valuable to society. Some areas we explore and work on include:
(a) Incorporating more diverse perspectives and expertise into the ratings process. This could include involving more people from different backgrounds, cultures, and disciplines in the rating process to ensure that a wider range of voices and perspectives are considered. Indeed, right now the A' Design Award call for entries is published in almost all languages and the A' Design Awards, who is supporting the World Design Ratings reach a very wide array of users worldwide, therefore we are very good at this.
(b) Making the ratings criteria and process more transparent and understandable to the public. This could include providing clear explanations of what factors are considered when determining a design's ranking, as well as making the data and methodology used in the ratings publicly available. We are indeed also very good at this because the ratings are published online and currently the way to obtain them passes through the A' Design Awards, where the designer's work are evaluated by blind peer-review process, ensuring meritocratic results.
(c) Encouraging more participation from designers and design professionals. By making the ratings more inclusive and accessible, more designers may be willing to submit their work for evaluation, which would help to ensure that the ratings are as accurate and representative as possible. To help achieve this goal, the A' Design Awards offer more than 40 distinct ways to take part in the competition completely free of charge.
(d) Increasing the frequency of the ratings. Currently the ratings are done once a year, increasing the frequency of the ratings would allow for more projects to be evaluated and more up-to-date information for the public. We are working on this and try to update the ratings twice a year or every quarter.
(e) Incorporating more quantitative data and feedback from stakeholders such as users, clients and other people who were affected by the design, to provide a more holistic view of the design's impact. This is one direction we are not exploring yet, as we want to ensure the ratings are more based on creative capacity than ratings done by clients, however this is something we wish to keep in mind for the future.
Developing a way to measure the sustainability of the designs. As the world faces more and more environmental challenges, it is important to evaluate the design's impact on the environment as well as it's functionality.
Overall, making the World Design Ratings more inclusive, transparent, and representative would help to ensure that they are more valuable to society.
