MADA s.p.a.m. is an atypical practice group in Chinese architecture that emerged during a typical period of social transformation, never forming a stereotype as it continues to develop, and never losing its sensitivity in the process of maturation. This is contributed to its multi-disciplinary, multifaceted and multi-layered engagement with architecture and the social and human conditions in which it is embedded. MADA s.p.a.m., whose members come from all over the world, was officially established in 1999 in Shanghai as a Chinese architectural design office, and has participated in various forms in architectural designs in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Foshan, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Chengdu, Xi'an and Tianjin. In 2007, with the appointment of founder Ma Qingyun as the dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California, MADA s.p.a.m. opened an office in Los Angeles, dedicated to promote the architectural practices and the establishment of academic platforms in the Pacific Rim.
