SUMMARY: JOHI Furniture & Design creates furniture, home decor, and wooden surf gear to bring us closer to the people and places we call home. The husband and wife team, Raja and Holly Badr-El-Din, are based in Maui, Hawaii. FURTHER DETAILS: We design and create furniture, decor, and wooden surf gear to bring us closer to the people and places we call home. From the beginning, we envisioned our company as a way to connect further with our hands, our cultures, and our communities - and to encourage others to do so. With this point of view, we formed our brand name with a combination of our family homes: Jordan and Hawai’i. With family spread all over the globe, we enjoy exploring multiculturalism through design and media. In our first furniture collection, this was manifested in weaving, as seen on the Pohihi Entry Console, Hibal Coffee Table, and Kamehana Writing Desk. To approach furniture from a cultural point of view feels necessary, but also challenging, in that we want to leave room for one to impart their own taste. In the end, we aim to create pieces that will grow with families and individuals - built to take on memories and meaning. This intent has always been the foundation of our surf collection, as well. Living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean allows one to have a strong relationship with the ocean. It was natural for us to explore creating pieces that could go easily from wall to waves. Our bodysurf handplanes and wooden surfboards use a mix of locally sourced and imported woods. What’s exciting about our area’s climate is that the gear can easily be used year round. In the process of refining a vision into a final piece, so much is taken away. In our work, we’ve sought ways to highlight some of those pieces that often get left behind. It has led us to the create traditional forms that feature wood shavings, such as our Mabroom Side Table and Wood Curl Resin Coasters. It has also led to non-traditional forms, like our Tilt sculpture of resin cast wood shavings and Kumu sculpture, a hand turned and ebonized oak vase which hosts a climbing lei of wood curls. Somewhere in the middle are our decor items, such as the Geo Lamp, Skini-Mini Bud Vase, and Honey Pot Vase, which repurpose wood left over from larger builds. Offering collection pieces and custom work, our studio’s doors are often open, just off the main road in Haliimaile, on the island of Maui. Raja Badr-El-Din, trained as a product designer at Stanford University, has always been drawn to creating with wood - shaping and building with pieces that have led longer and wiser lives. Holly Badr-El-Din brings a background of creative technology and project management to further collaborate on and develop the studio’s portfolio.
