About Zahra Hamzelou : Zahra Hamzelou is a designer and maker specializing in comfort-driven beanbag furniture. Since 2017, she has collaborated directly with clients to craft seating solutions that prioritize ergonomics, emotional comfort, and balance. Her design approach is shaped by her academic background as a PhD candidate in English Literature, where she has explored themes of identity, solitude, and inner dialogue. Drawing from philosophy, psychology, and lived experience, Zahra views furniture not only as a functional object but as a space that supports reflection, rest, and emotional well-being. Her work seeks to create moments of calm and presence in the rhythm of everyday life. She is the founder of Caspiloun, an independent workshop in Tabriz focused on customizable seating and emotional design. STATEMENT OF ART:I don’t come from a traditional design background, and I don’t claim to have all the answers. My journey into design began through a need — a quiet desire to create something that could comfort both the body and the mind. That desire grew in my small workshop, where real people with real needs would walk in and ask for something softer, something higher, something more personal. That’s where I started listening more closely — not just to what they wanted, but to what they felt. To me, design is a form of listening. It is the art of observing the unsaid: the way someone shifts in their seat, the way light falls in a quiet room, or how a person exhales when they finally feel safe. Design doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful. Sometimes, the most powerful things are the softest. Art, for me, is presence. It’s a moment of stillness where something connects — not always through logic, but through feeling. I think of art as the part of life that doesn’t need to be explained. You don’t need to understand a cloud to rest under its shade. You don’t need to analyze a poem to be moved by it. In this way, art and design are cousins. Both seek to create experiences — one more free, one more functional — but when they overlap, something healing can happen. I’m particularly interested in design that honors emotional needs — especially those of women — in everyday life. The need to rest without guilt. The need to be supported without explanation. The need for softness, not as luxury, but as a language of care. I think the body understands things before the mind does. So, if a chair can help someone breathe a little easier, sit a little longer, or feel held without words — then that, to me, is design doing its quiet work. I also believe that design isn’t about impressing others, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be impressive. A form that speaks softly, that holds symbolic meaning, that evokes peace — can still leave a lasting impression. My Cloud Beanbag project came from this place: the belief that we all deserve spaces that hold us gently. In a world that often asks us to harden, I see design as the invitation to soften — in form, in pace, in spirit. I don’t aim to create perfect objects. I aim to create presence. Design is not about shaping objects — it’s about shaping experiences that care.
