About Seokhun You : Simon You is an industrial designer specializing in wearable technology, smart textiles, and soft goods design. A graduate of Pratt Institute in 2024, he is currently part of Interwoven Design Group, an industrial and product design consultancy that focuses on integrating advanced materials and technology into everyday products. His work spans multiple industries, allowing him to explore diverse applications of wearable innovation. Through his expertise in material exploration and user-centered design, Simon contributes to the evolution of functional and technologically enhanced products that bridge the gap between design and engineering. Design, to me, is about making things work better while looking and feeling right. It’s not just about how something looks, but how it functions, how people interact with it, and how it fits into everyday life. Unlike art, which is about pure expression, design has a job to do—it solves problems, improves experiences, and sometimes even fades into the background to let the user take the spotlight. I’ve always been drawn to minimalism, which is why Jonny Ive’s work at Apple really resonates with me. His philosophy of stripping things down to only what’s essential is something I think about a lot in my own work. Good design isn’t about making something look cool—it’s about removing the unnecessary so that what remains feels effortless and intuitive. Working in wearable tech, smart textiles, and soft goods, I’ve realized how much design has to do with the body. It’s not like designing a chair or a phone; it has to move with people, feel good on their skin, and integrate seamlessly into their routines. It’s a mix of materials, engineering, and aesthetics, and that’s what makes it so interesting to me. I see art and design as different but connected. Art asks questions, design provides answers. Art makes you stop and think, design should feel so natural that you don’t have to think about it at all. But the best designs have a little bit of art in them—they make you feel something, even if it’s just a sense of ease. At the end of the day, I just want to create things that people actually want to use, things that make life a little smoother, a little better. For me, design is about making complexity feel simple.
