About Su Chih Chang : Su Chih Chang is a Taiwanese designer working across fashion accessories, textile arts, and craft-based design research. Her practice integrates traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design methods through independent creation, brand development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Chang’s work has been recognized by international design competitions and academic conferences, and is held in museum and private collections. Through material exploration and embodied making, she contributes to contemporary discussions on craft, cultural continuity, and design as a mode of thinking. Design and art, to me, are ways of returning to clarity—and through clarity, to freedom. In the earlier stages of my creative practice, I was deeply engaged with form, craftsmanship, and layered visual language. Complexity and refined detail felt essential, offering structure and meaning while allowing me to develop technical discipline and sensitivity to materials. Over time, however, repeated making, revising, and observing gradually shifted my perspective. I began to notice that not everything added to a work brings it closer to its essence. When creation is shaped too heavily by expectations, even carefully crafted elements can distance a work from its inner life. Through the process of revisiting and simplifying my own works, I learned that reduction is not a loss, but a form of understanding. When unnecessary elements are gently set aside, what remains often feels quieter, more honest, and complete. Clarity, I realized, does not need to be asserted—it naturally reveals itself. Today, I see design as a process of distillation rather than accumulation. It is not about proving value, but about recognizing what is already present. Art, in the same way, is not driven by validation or outcomes, but arises from attentiveness to life—its rhythms, emotions, and subtle truths. I now understand creation not as a means toward recognition, but as a lifelong practice aligned with existence itself. Whether or not a work is seen, rewarded, or measured, creation remains essential. When excessive desire is released, both life and work return to a quieter, more genuine state. Creation, at its core, is not about becoming more, but about gently returning to what already is.
