Rajendra has mentored undergraduate and postgraduate students, fostering critical thinking and a practical approach to design challenges. Dedicated to nurturing the next generation of designers, he actively engages in workshops, symposia, and academic collaborations. STATEMENT OF ART:To me, design and art are distinct yet deeply intertwined forms of human expression, both rooted in creativity but serving different purposes. Design is purposeful problem-solving, where function, innovation, and aesthetics harmoniously coexist to create solutions that elevate human experiences. Art, on the other hand, is boundless self-expression that evokes emotions, provokes thought, and challenges perceptions. Together, they represent humanity’s ability to imagine, create, and evolve. As a designer with over two decades of professional experience 15 years of academic contributions and 10 years of industry experience, my perspective on art and design is inherently tied to the intersection of creativity, culture, and education. Design, to me, is not merely about creating objects or visuals; it is about crafting meaningful experiences that resonate with people. Whether designing wayfinding systems that guide individuals seamlessly through urban environments or reviving the cultural essence of scripts through typography, I believe that design serves as a bridge between intention and impact. Art, in contrast, allows freedom from boundaries. It challenges conventions and offers a canvas for introspection and emotional connection. My journey as a photographer and calligrapher has allowed me to explore art as a deeply personal endeavor, while my academic contributions have focused on channeling art’s essence into design pedagogy. Art inspires design by offering new ways to perceive the world, while design anchors art with a purpose that connects to real-world needs. My work has consistently aimed to weave the threads of culture, tradition, and modernity into design education. Reviving the Modi script through a modern typeface or teaching students to design multilingual wayfinding systems has underscored the importance of preserving cultural identity while addressing contemporary challenges. Design, in this sense, is not just about aesthetics or functionality—it is a vehicle to tell stories, honor heritage, and shape futures. As an educator, I see design as a tool to empower students with critical thinking, innovation, and adaptability. My teaching philosophy revolves around nurturing curiosity and instilling the confidence to question and innovate. By engaging students in hands-on projects—whether creating a zine on the history of typography or exploring the application of regional scripts—I encourage them to view design as a holistic discipline that integrates art, culture, and technology. In my experience, design education is about equipping learners not just with technical skills but also with a sense of responsibility toward society. Through collaborative workshops, mentorship, and research, I aim to inspire students to think beyond trends and focus on creating sustainable, ethical, and impactful designs. To sum it up, design is a means to improve the world through intention, and art is a lens to understand it. Together, they define my creative identity and commitment to shaping the next generation of designers.
