About TINGWEI WANG : I am a feminist artist and educator whose work explores the intersections of fashion, kinship, and feminism. With a foundation in Knitwear Design and advanced training in Pattern and Garment Design from London College of Fashion, I bring a unique sensitivity to lines, structures, and the interplay between body and garment. My teaching and research delve into the emotional and social meanings of clothing across generations, addressing tensions around gender, identity, and family relationships. By combining craft practices, advanced technology, and interactive art, I aim to challenge patriarchal expectations and foster intergenerational understanding through fashion. My work not only highlights often-overlooked narratives in clothing but also contributes to societal dialogue on gender and kinship in contemporary China. STATEMENT OF ART:People around me often don't perceive me as a feminist artist, yet my life has been deeply artistic, driven by a unique perspective that aims to reveal and record feminist struggles through art and design. I appreciate the craftsmanship in clothing, because the value of the stories and histories behind each piece is often ignored by the fast fashion trends of today. As a feminist artist, I am struggling for recognition that is against the gender expectations of my age about marriage and childbirth, ending up being seen as an idealist by older generations in a patriarchal society in China. This struggle has made me rethink fashion from the perspectives of intergenerational relationships and feminism, which leads me to concern fashion, kinship and feminism. I am always fascinated by lines, structures, textures, and the play of light and shadow. This sensitivity led me to study Knitwear Design in my undergraduate years, where I was amazed by the ability to create garments from a single thread, which could beautifully outline a woman’s silhouette. My curiosity deepened as I explored the space and volume between a female body and a garment through craft practices and advanced technology during my MA in Pattern and Garment Design at London College of Fashion (LCF). These studies equipped me with excellent skills in pattern cutting and an appreciation for the plasticity and inclusiveness of knitwear.
