About Marina Maier : I have had the privilege of participating in numerous competitions throughout my career, which has continually fueled my passion for design. With a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and a master’s in Multimedia, I have dedicated the past 15 years to working as a graphic designer and producer. My experience includes collaborations with television networks and the European Commission, where I’ve created a diverse array of impactful graphic design projects. Design and art are both expressions of human creativity, but each carries a distinct purpose and approach to communication. While they often intersect, each plays a unique role in how we experience the world around us. In my view, design is the language of function and communication, while art is the language of emotion and imagination. Together, they form a dynamic force that shapes not only the visual landscape but also our understanding of the world. Design is, at its core, about solving problems. It is the process of creating solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Whether it’s a product, a logo, an interface, or a space, design is always about making something that serves a purpose. But what makes design powerful is its ability to make complex ideas accessible. The best designs are those that balance beauty with utility, creating experiences that feel effortless and intuitive. It’s not just about making things look good—it’s about making them work well and make sense. Good design is often invisible; it works so seamlessly that you don’t notice it, but you feel the impact in your experience. The emotional response elicited by design can be just as strong as that evoked by art, but it usually comes from the way the design makes you feel understood, or how it simplifies your interaction with the world. Art, on the other hand, has a different focus. Art is not necessarily about solving problems—it’s about expressing emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a way that transcends words. It’s the manifestation of the artist’s internal world, captured in a medium that invites interpretation. Whether it’s a painting, a sculpture, a piece of music, or a film, art is often about evoking a reaction. It doesn’t need to be practical or functional, and it doesn’t have to serve a particular purpose other than to stir something within the viewer. Art is about exploration—of ideas, of emotions, of the human condition. It’s about challenging conventions and expressing the inexpressible. The beauty of art lies in its ambiguity, in its ability to make us think, feel, and see the world in a new light. From my perspective, design and art are two sides of the same coin. They are both forms of communication—one is often used to connect people to products, services, or ideas, while the other connects people to emotions, experiences, or thoughts. What makes them so powerful is that they share a common thread: they are both meant to speak to people. They draw on the same creative energies but apply them in different ways. In my work, I strive to merge the practicality of design with the emotional depth of art. I see design not only as a functional tool but also as an opportunity to evoke emotions and create connections. The challenge is to create something that not only works but also resonates. Every project is a chance to balance form and function, aesthetics and purpose. In this way, design becomes more than just a solution—it becomes a way to tell stories and evoke feelings. I believe that the best design should always have an emotional component, and the best art should always communicate something about the world around us. When the two come together, magic happens. That’s when design becomes art, and art becomes design. Both are essential to how we navigate the world, and both should challenge us to think, feel, and engage in ways that expand our understanding of who we are and what we can create. Motto: Design is the art of making things work; art is the design of making things feel.
