About Sheree Toh : Sheree Toh is a Singapore-based fashion designer whose works challenge conventions of form and functionality, focusing on textile experimentation. She takes inspiration from literature and behavioural studies, such that her designs act as a critical social commentary and mirror human relationships. Led by optimism and a passion for the community, she believes in creating works that reflect individual voices. For me, 'art' and 'design' are celebratory terms for creative expression. Within a meritocratic society that places strong emphasis on other sectors such as finance, technology and tourism, art and design does not seem to hold much weight and people often question the feasibility, relevance and potential of the creative scene. While the worries and concerns may deter potential creatives from pursuing and presenting their unique voices to the rest of the world, I strongly believe that there are other individuals out there who are like myself, working towards to achieve a collective vision where creatives are not seen any much lesser than others. Art and design extends beyond beauty and aesthetic: a painting is not just pretty strokes of colours, a performance piece is not just beautiful movements and sounds, neither is a garment just another gorgeous item to store in the closet. There is more than meets the eye in art and design, and it is unfortunate that not many people can look beyond the surface, the exterior that forms a solid judgment in their eyes, even if it took an extremely long period of hard work, sweat and tears. Often that not, the message behind the works are lost in translation and are not being accurately received by the audience - perhaps that formed the impression that art and design is only for the rich, or only for a niche group of viewers who understand and appreciate the works. As a fresh graduate and aspiring designer, I believe in creating works that resonates with individuals across ages, gender and sexuality, across geographical and language barriers. It is definitely an idealistic perspective and desire to have people appreciating my work because they believe in the narrative, the work and the value of it, as I am only one person. But with the many other creatives around the world working and fighting towards conveying their own voice and hoping for the public to appreciate their works, I think it is possible. Lastly, it is not accurate to say that there are no restrictions to what you can present in art and design, because there will always be limitations imposed by a higher organisation, institution, regardless of the degree. However, creatives are people who acknowledge the rules and choose to challenge the status quo through a plethora of ideas and medium(s) addressing issues that most would have brushed off or silently accepted, representing a new wave of change that the world should anticipate.
