About Augustin Nestor Yamuno : Augustin Nestor Yamuno is an urban planning consultant. In addition to excelling throughout his studies from Primary School to University education and receiving several prizes, he has participated in activities / events organized by the United Nations since his childhood. He also has a knack for memorising large amounts of data and has several talents and skills (such as in music) - that flavour his professional endeavours. His nicknames thus include “professor”, “community servant”, and “computer”.
Besides having founded an international land planning company, Mr Augustin has been working for 10 years on urban design, GIS, research on lands, project planning, urban planning, sustainable development, and urban resilience. These efforts have included thousands of households, as well as various authorities (ministers, directors) and institutions such as the World Bank. Having already being admitted (abstract accepted), Mr Augustin is also scheduled to present a research on resilient city planning at the LANDac Conference (in the Netherlands), a conference postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. This perseverant “citizen of Africa” is passionate about brainstorming implementable urban designs for the African context and providing land services to low-income communities in Africa.
STATEMENT OF ART:
An appropriate Urban Design in Africa is not about the “beautiful” high-rise buildings and expensive urban plans; it is rather translating on ground the real needs of all people including low income communities and young people whose effective demand is to partake at least a small land parcel out of the big “fish” of city land. Otherwise, informal settlements will not end in spite of all efforts and regularisation of informal settlements which is reactive action will continue instead of using proactive and slum prevention designs. Understanding community standards and not theoretical and high standards can lead to a Design for the urban poor and young people in African cities. An implementable and “beautiful” design in the practical eyes of most Africans should be like a Fish which everybody can partake and not mostly for high income earners.
