About Rochelle de Abreu : I am a South African born female in the year 1994. The term 'Born Free's" given to me and others born in 1994 later became a topic of relevance to me and those around me. It became the base of some of my work as this term given upon us with the simple explanation of you are born into a free democratic South Africa, was not as true as it sounded or seemed. This is when I realised that I need to give a voice to the voiceless and a visual representation to the unseen. South African identity became of interest to me. This also formed and allowed the storyteller in me to be expressed through portraiture. I soon realised that I too had an eye for design and started implementing the two together. I am relevant as I know what it is like to be silenced when you have so much to say but often it is not welcomed or individuals would rather live naively than face the political climate or emotional rollercoasters.

My major achievements were definitely my final year of studies in which I was able to refine my craft. Being one of ten finalists for the Sony student focus photography awards was definitely my highlight. My contribution to society is being able to converse with individuals about South Africa, the 'born free's', 'women' and allow the space for controversial conversations to take place without judgement.

Allowing the space for myself to tell my story of past times of struggles, relationships and allowing others to do the same via my camera or design. This starts conversation and healing will follow, mending bridges and uniting to be stronger together and when you stand alone. I have a unique fresh and very honest way of telling stories through design and photography. This I think makes me relevant as being able to be relatable by humanising your work is important.
STATEMENT OF ART:
It is the greatest tool mankind owns. It created manifestos through which new art was born and celebrated. It allowed for controversial conversations to start, changing mindsets and laws. Design and art holds power that is unmeasurable and formidable. Every shade of colour, every stroke tells a story that you've never heard or one you can relate to and you are left feeling heard or educated and emotions evoked. It is vital to all humankind because if it was non existent, a lot would be different. Buildings would be built differently, you wouldn't be able to differentiate one brand from the next. Our cry out in times of political destruction would be unheard. Design and Arts is the constant voice of the people of the world.
