I run an Instagram page by the name of ‘Just Because’ which I use as a platform to showcase my illustration work. While it remains a good source of freelance projects, many a time my work comments on social issues facing people in my country or elsewhere. Through my work, I have been vocal about women’s rights in Pakistan, human right violations in Kashmir and the need to raise awareness on Autism in South Asia along with many other issues.
STATEMENT OF ART:Art, according to me, is the creator’s expression of something using one or more than one medium. When creating art, the creator is free to say whatever he/she likes and in way he/she feels right. Design however is a more commercial take on creativity and provides certain limitations such as target audience, the message to be conveyed and the medium(s) to be used. This is more challenging but at the same time, leaves the creator with fewer options to play around with.
Having worked in the world of advertising for quite some time now, I have experimented with a variety of illustration styles for different brands. The experience has been very interesting as I got to apply the medium that I enjoy the most, to different aspects of advertising. Unlike art, where I can do any kind of illustration for anything, design required certain lines, colors and elements to be played with for a particular advertising campaign and hence, was slightly more limiting. However, it remains a different avenue with different requirements, which I enjoy a lot.
