He established his jewellery brand, van Walraven Goudsmid, in 2019 while obtaining his Goldsmithing Graduate Certificate from Georgian College. During his time in college, Peter earned the title “Best in Show” and graduated top of his class. Peter also achieved his degree in geology which inspires his ideas, designs and materials. By utilizing his knowledge of the Earth and gemstones, he wishes to venerate the stories of Earth through his jewellery as these are the stories of our own formation.
STATEMENT OF ART:Art is a way to tell a story, to encapsulate a memory. Design is the process for turning that story into something tangible, something eternal. Jewellery is the most personal art form as it carries the deepest stories of the human spirit. It is no coincidence that we combine the most beautiful objects of nature to the most important events, memories of our life. There is something primitive yet powerful to how humans connect with the natural world of stone, metal and crystal.
Now, we can understand the story of stone through the lens of science and discovery. Our understanding of the Earth deepens revealing a story of chaos and order, destruction and revival, just like our own stories. Goldsmithing is about combining these stories, it is about creating an anchor that connects us to our home, the Earth.
