Growing up in an oppressed country like Syria, I always witnessed the effect of a dictatorship on the art community, marginalizing, oppressing and controlling the art outcome, played a key role in controlling the people. Through lowering the standards, monitoring, and suffocating creativity and the free mind, it lead to a decade of low quality, mind controlled, one point view artistic outcome. That eventually in my opinion, had a tremendous effect on the people.
After the Syrian revolution, new groups of artists started to emerge, to everyone’s total surprise, the most outstanding art production came from a very small forgotten village in Syria, the village of Kafranbel.
Normal people with no background in art study or history, used current global event, movies, classical novels..etc. to deliver the message of the Syrian tragedy to the world, by incorporating everyday global events and connecting them to the Syrian tragedy. through hand written and hand drawn banners, carried them in their daily protests.
Kafranbel as small as it is, gave Syrian a voice that other people around the world can relate to in a human level. more than the media or the news outlet
for an artist like my self, that gave tremendous hope. The people are still alive under all that oppression, when giving a breath, they raised again and they were still able to create despite the decades of oppression they were under.
showing that art is the first and simplest way for delivering a message, a story throughout the glob as the one language that all humanity shares and understands.
