About Ariel Báez Herebia : What I wanted to be and what I still dream to become started the day I watched Toy Story for the first time when I was only 10 years old. That day I was impressed by watching toys move and talk as naturally as humans. That spoke to me profoundly as a kid and it fascinated me. Years later, in high school, as I watched a documentary on Discovery Channel about how movies were made, I was exposed to the concept of design and 3D animation for the first time. Perhaps at that point it was not so meaningful, but years later my curiosity about the world of 3D grew and led me to research it, so that I could do it myself.
That was when I decided to learn on my own how to model in 3D. Every single night after I arrived from college, I put in hours and hours making videos until dawn. Sometimes they were simple 3D objects or textures. It was more of a hobby with the sole purpose of uploading my creations to Facebook. I didn’t plan to work on this to the point of turning it into a profession.
Between 2010 and 2013 I met people that wanted me to contribute to the development of a videogame project that required my knowledge of design and 3D modeling. That project opened many doors for further learning and job opportunities.
I believe the most remarkable moment for me was taking part into a design event at the Central Bank of Paraguay, where I shared my experience in designing videogames to over 100 people as a speaker. That made me happy and it moved me in such a way that I understood that I care a lot about sharing what I learnt to other people, so they could make use of that knowledge in their lives. Since then I am not only passionate about design, but also about teaching those who need knowledge about it. Usually, design is seen as another branch of art, that one must necessarily be an artist to approach it. It could be said that in a certain way it is true and also that it is not. It is often assumed that designing is an attractive drawing on paper. However, most of the designers- as well as those who are not- are unaware that actually the fundamental thing is the process in which the problems and the optimal solutions are investigated and analyzed both to design a logo or to design the best car of the world. That said, even if designing a book, designing a car or designing a symphony requires using our knowledge, passion is also needed, feeling that one does it from the heart, and the final result will be, effectively, what we might call an art.
