About Sbongiseni M Nene : I am highly creative person. I started drawing shoes at the age of 3 years but I’ve never had support in South Africa. I grew up in the semi-rural place in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. I went to school with rural children, so I can relate very well at the grassroot level. I’ve worked for an NGO who helped rural women crafters who were potters, weavers and beaders of Zulu crafts to be able to sell to the international market. I only discovered in my thirties that Footwear Design is a huge career, because in my country accessory production industry is not taken as a seriously, till I came across an ad in a Accessorie magazine (Italian) which I used to buy.
I acquired a Hons Design degree in a prestigious university of the Arts in London I’m a highly disciplined individual who sees to finish every project I start. I’m a great learner, and I’m good at teaching myself new skills. I love learning about other people's cultures especially when it comes to their arts and crafts as I come from an African culture (Zulu) which has a very strong background in cultural adornment, creating crafts like basketry, beaded jewellery pieces, telephone wire baskets, pottery making, etc.
There is an art to design and one can design aspects of art. Both art and design are meant to communicate. ... Each of use has a unique definition for what we consider as art. Art is a means of expression. Society continues to grow in complexity, giving artists new ideas to express with their work. Art and design – both involve compositions, using physical and visual means. Both share a base of knowledge and skill. Both involve applying imagination and creativity to the concepts they address. And yet they are not the same – obviously, you might think, of course, they are not the same. One cannot deny the differences between art and design. Yet the two still remain inextricably linked; in a gracious harmony with one another. The first argument one can make is that design is, in fact, a kind of art in its own right and that the attempt to separate them is meaningless. The other is that they are completely distinct practices that happen to share some attributes ORGANIZATION: Pepeneneh Exotic Designs NON-DESIGN OCCUPATION: Secretary Clerks, secretaries, post, telephone EDUCATION: I studied in South Africa till I finished school. After that I went to a Technical College for 1 year to do a Clothing Design course in 1987-88. I couldn't finish my degree because of financial constraints. I worked as a Secretary for +10 yrs. In 2006 I got accepted at University of the Arts, Cordwainer's College in London, UK Production Design for the Fashion Industry (Footwear). I graduated in 2010 with a BAHons in footwear. I went back to South Africa to try and start my business, but I just couldn't get help financially. So I have been trying to find business partners internationally but I haven't had any luck so far. In my country a career like Fashion Accessory Design is not well supported, that's why I have wanted to go to Europe to work there. EXPERIENCE: I have only done part time office work as a secretary/ typist as well as worked with an NGO that helped rural women crafters who do beadworks, pottery, basketry. That's where my interest in the Design & Arts fuelled me to study footwear design as I'm very good at drawing shoes and bags. I haven't worked as a footwear designer in my country as jobs like these are not available. Our factories that produce accessories were closed and labour was taken to China. PRIVATE EXHIBITIONS: I only exhibited my designs when I graduated at University of the Arts in London in 2010.
