About Pooya Goudarzi : The architectural designer Pooya Goudarzi founded VerteX Design Studio in 2010. Since finishing his master’s degree in architecture from Azad University of Tehran, Pooya has been a key member of several architecture firms, including Metaforms (West Hollywood) and Langdon Wilson International (downtown Los Angeles). As the senior designer, he has led more than 100 diverse projects. His work has been presented on prominent stages such as Anaheim Convention Center Expansion and Khandama Competition in Saudi Arabia. STATEMENT OF ART:Pooya comes from a family of keen and active architects, including his older brother and his late father. This family milieu presented him with a unique opportunity to grow his inner interests in a rich and productive soil. In the recent years, Pooya has developed a profound love for concrete. His unique vision has enabled him to successfully integrate the art of architectural design with the alchemy of concrete making. The fruit of this marriage is VerteX Design Studio, encompassing a platform for architectural design and a design-build concrete shop. Pooya’s line of products includes tables, stools, countertops, tabletops, lights and other accessories. Pooya’s certifications and qualifications also include International Associate AIA, Leed AP, Califronia-licensed realtor Motivation: As an architect-designer, my creative thoughts focus on design, and material but also on object details and functional connections. Some of these concepts are employed in the day-to- day architectural work, while others more rarely come to mind. I started designing and building furniture to integrate details and connection into tangible and functional objects. In standard architectural work, one has to spend an enormous amount of time working with the clients to understand their needs and desires. If often takes, even more, time to educate them about various possibilities and limitation of any one plan. At times it feels more like “defending” one’s design philosophy against the client’s unrealistic expectations than a truly collaborative effort. In designing furniture and other small functional objects, one can express his or her own ideology and creativity and realize the results in a matter of days. A more instant gratification of the creative impulse, I would say. Inspiration: Nature is the key to understanding structure, design, and sustainability. Nature epitomizes the fusion of form and function: a tree has deep roots underground, a strong trunk to hold the branches and the leaves, all to ultimately bear fruit containing the seeds of the future. Philosophy: I have chosen concrete as the main material to work with because it’s fluidity that lends itself well to formability and flexibility of use. My main aims are threefold: making concrete light, flexible and translucent. These three features are not those that immediately come to mind when one thinks of concrete. I inspire to design material and systems that can be self-organized, self- supported and scalable. I believe that such an approach can lead to optimum load bearing and maximum usage flexibility.
