About Paper Punk : Paper Punk is a LEGO + Origami mash up where colorful 2D flat paper shapes transform into bold 3D geometric blocks to create spectacular looking paper toys and art forms with a few simple folds. Like Frank Gehry’s flat-pack furniture, the Paper Punk experience comes in compact packages. With a little elbow grease, piles of paper magically transform into voluminous 3D masterpieces without the need for scissors or glue. Users punch out flat paper shapes, fold into fully enclosed paper blocks, stick them together in whatever configuration they want using the provided adhesive dots, and customize with provided stickers. What you can build with Paper Punk is only limited by your imagination. Making a Paper Punk looks and tastes like a cupcake, but it is really broccoli for your brain! STATEMENT OF ART:Marcel Duchamp is my hero. As an artist, publisher, author, and educator, I’ve dedicated myself to inspiring and enabling people to make things with their hands. After spending almost a decade publishing ReadyMade, the critically acclaimed magazine that paved the way for reuse design and modern craft, I began teaching design thinking at Stanford University’s d.school—it was way to carry inspiration to transformation. From witnessing my students’ difficulty with a dimensional thinking exercise the concept of Paper Punk, an origami meets Legos mash-up, was born. It is an innovative tool/toy that enables anyone to exercise their creativity and make things with their hands. The experience of transforming flat 2D paper shapes into voluminous 3D paper blocks is not just a fun feat of making a paper toy or art form, it is an exercise in dimensional thinking, materiality, rapid prototyping, bias to action, geometry, engineering, art and creativity. Hands-on experiences like these are essential to our existence and to building our intuition. Paper toys have been around for centuries and paper as a material is ubiquitous, but with Paper Punk the material is redefined as a creativity tool/toy as it takes on new life and much needed meaning in a modern world increasingly lost in daily digital conveniences. I’ve modernized origami into an accessible creativity tool that will help all of us stay connected to the tangible world. Folding paper facilitates, inspires and enables people to find beauty and meaning in their lives through the act of making. Paper is no longer paper; it is a tool of reimagination and creative potential—it is my medium and craft.
