It is difficult to express the meaning of Design especially if you work in Italy.
It is common knowledge that Italy and Italians are linked to everything that regards Design and Art
but growing up, physically and professionally, in the Design field may bring you to a distorted vision of the difference between the two. This is due to the fact that there is a strong and essential connection to the past of this country and the most influential artistic movements that influenced the lives of all of its people.
We need to consider that the development of courses of specialization in Design has increased in the past two decades. The term ‘Design’ has become part of common vocabulary.
None the less, if you try to ask an Italian what the meaning of the word ‘Design’ is, the answer would probably be ‘’disegno’’ which, instead, means ‘’drawing’’. This is the first reason why Design is naturally connected to the artistic field here in Italy.
As a professional Designer, for me, Design includes all of the activities needed to develop series production for the market. Art is something unique that can express a physical or metaphorical experience. Based on academic thought patterns, this is the main distinction between Design and Art. This doesn’t exclude that an industrial product cannot produce an experience. In fact, many customers buy products that they actually do not need but choose to do so because they ‘feel’ fulfilled.
From my point of view, the in-depth meaning of Design is personal: it is what you want it to be.
There is no right or wrong. It’s personal and you will probably find multiple definitions of it along your lifetime . Design is not just a profession, it’s a way of life.
