Interview with Louis Lau at Sunday 13th of April 2014

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
LL: I study interior design over 5 years and I have working in the field over 15 years

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
LL: We love design and we only do good design. We are experts not only in design but also in construction, building survey, engineer and building services. In the past years we have not only done interior design, but also “rebrands” for corporate such as New Vision, China Telecom and Vinda group. From a design concept, we develop to interior design, display, advertisement, selling method and uniform.

FS: What is "design" for you?
LL: Design is not only my career, mainly is my interest

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
LL: interior design, commercial project such as retail and workspace

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
LL: China Telecom flagship store in Macau, this is very hard to change a concept mind for a big Chinese traditional company but finally we made it

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
LL: A jewellery shop, they are still our client we designed 4 store for them in last 5 years

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
LL: we love timber, painted finished, somethings warm and long lasting

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
LL: always close to deadline of the project

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
LL: first thing is functional, then aesthetic, environmental friendly, durability and last is costing

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
LL: focus and sucessful

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
LL: peace

FS: What makes a design successful?
LL: use the heart to design, treat the projects as your own

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
LL: i think functional is the most important part, if cant achieve this point, this must be a bad design

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
LL: very simply for us, we just need to do our best on every single projects, then everything will be good…

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
LL: We think technology will apply a lot into our design such as home automation

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
LL: We think technology will apply a lot into our design such as home automation, and recycling material , energy saving solution will be very common in the future

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
LL: from Magazine, books, and daily life experiences.from Magazine, books, and daily life experiences. We pushing the creative by group discussion and brain storming


FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
LL: Our style is we focus on concept and functions. And we don’t have any specify style as every projects are unique

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
LL: We live in Hong Kong, a very speical place which mixed with Western and Chinese culture

FS: How do you work with companies?
LL: I'm a leader in the company and we work for our interest

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
LL: Company should sety some rules, rules no 1, every designer should love what they are doing, this is not a Job

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
LL: we lots of research, study client background and end users need, then we create a unique concept, then design development. After that present with 3D rendering and material board. Actually we can explain any details of our design because we design from concept

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
LL: lighting, space planning, detailing, artwork and loose furniture

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
LL: i work at 7 in the morning until 8pm everyday, I do need meet clients, internal group discussion, comment design, site meeting, actually in involve in whole design process

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
LL: should love what you doing, and working really really hard

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
LL: positives, we are lucking, our interest can earn salary for lives
negatives, our works really take us most of our time

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
LL: treat the projects as yours own

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
LL: I think spacious concept and detailing knowledge

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
LL: A pen and yellow tracing paper

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
LL: If the outcome and design are amazing, we allow some delay on design presentation and construction.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
LL: sometimes 2 months, sometimes 2 years

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
LL: what is your favorite style

FS: What was your most important job experience?
LL: mistake, we always have some mistake and we learn from it

FS: Who are some of your clients?
LL: China and international corporate brand

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
LL: interior design , my interest and career

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
LL: We believe that doing always our best, we can change the world and it’s not too far.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
LL: I works as a team leader and I’m that asshole pushing my them everyday

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
LL: no
