FS: Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
AC: I have been in the interior design industry for over 16 years, during which I have had the privilege to work with renowned firms such as sP+a and MAN associates. My educational background includes a post diploma in Interior Design from School of Interior Design-Rachana Sansad, Mumbai which laid the foundation for my design philosophy. I’ve collaborated with a diverse range of clients allowing me to explore various styles and preferences. Each experience has contributed significantly to my growth as a designer.
FS: How did you become a designer?
AC: My journey into design was deeply influenced by my family background. Growing up, I was surrounded by my parents, who were both in the design field. Watching my father’s work firsthand ignited my passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces. I felt a strong desire to continue the legacy but was determined to forge my own path. While I admired my father’s influence, I wanted to establish my own identity and firm, focusing on my unique vision and approach to design. This internal drive to innovate and create led me to pursue a degree in design and gain hands-on experience in the industry, ultimately shaping my career as a designer.
FS: What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
AC: My top three priorities in the design process are functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. I strive to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also practical and environmentally conscious. My approach often begins with sketching ideas by hand before transitioning to digital tools like CAD and rendering software.
FS: Which emotions do you feel when designing?
AC: Designing evokes a range of emotions for me—excitement during the ideation phase, joy when seeing concepts come to life, and satisfaction upon completing a project. The most thrilling moment is often the initial brainstorming, where possibilities are endless. The entire journey fulfills me, as I find immense pleasure in creating spaces that positively impact people's lives.
FS: What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
AC: My background has been instrumental in shaping my design philosophy. Growing up in a household where both my parents were involved in the design field, I was constantly exposed to the creative processes and projects they undertook. Observing my father's work and my mother's approach to design instilled in me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and attention to detail. Additionally, my time at sP+a was a pivotal moment in my development as a designer. It served as a reality check, where I had the opportunity to lead complex projects that challenged me and pushed my boundaries. This experience allowed me to acquire essential tools and techniques while helping me to discover and refine my own design ideology. The combination of my familial influences and professional experiences has profoundly shaped my journey and approach to design.
FS: What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
AC: Currently, I manage a small studio of five talented individuals, and my vision is to expand our team to ten. I believe that by growing our studio, we can take on more ambitious projects, particularly in the realm of boutique hospitality spaces. Designing a boutique hotel has been a long-held dream of mine. I envision creating a unique and immersive experience that reflects the local culture and aesthetics while providing guests with an unforgettable stay. My future plans include not only pursuing this dream project but also fostering a collaborative environment within my team, encouraging innovation and creativity as we take on new challenges in the design industry.
FS: What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
AC: I advise emerging designers to stay curious and open-minded. Understand that every project is an opportunity to learn. Do not shy away from challenges; they often lead to the most significant growth. Seek mentorship and be proactive in expanding your knowledge through workshops, courses, and design communities. The best advice I received was to embrace failure as a stepping stone to success.
FS: You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
AC: I encourage fellow designers to prioritize authenticity in their work. Avoid trends that don’t align with your vision; instead, focus on what resonates with you. Maintain a portfolio that reflects your unique style and values, and be willing to adapt and learn from every experience. Networking and collaboration are crucial—connect with other creatives to inspire and challenge each other.
FS: What is your day to day look like?
AC: My typical workweek consists of five days, with weekends reserved for breaks and quality time with family and friends. Each weekday starts with a morning workout, which helps me clear my mind and energize for the day ahead. I usually arrive at the studio before the rest of the team to set the tone for the day and review our priorities. On alternate days, I conduct site visits to ensure that projects are progressing as planned and to engage with contractors and clients directly. These visits are crucial for maintaining quality and addressing any challenges that may arise on-site. Music is a constant in my daily routine; it fuels my creativity and enhances the atmosphere in the studio. Lunchtime is a special part of our day, as my team and I gather to share a meal together. During these lunches, we discuss improvements to our systems and workflow, but we also take the time to have personal conversations about health, self-care, and work-life balance. I believe fostering an open and supportive environment is essential for both professional growth and team cohesion. As the day progresses, I balance project management, design development, and client meetings, ensuring that communication flows smoothly and that everyone is aligned with our goals. In the evenings, I choose to go for a brisk walk after dinner, which helps me unwind and reflect on the day. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, making my work both dynamic and fulfilling.
FS: How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
AC: I actively follow design publications, and participate in design fairs to stay updated with the latest trends. While I appreciate current trends, I prioritize creating timeless designs that resonate with my clients’ needs. My goal is to blend contemporary influences with enduring elements, ensuring that the spaces I design remain relevant and cherished for years to come.
FS: How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
AC: Good design is defined by its functionality, aesthetics, and emotional impact. A well-designed project seamlessly integrates these aspects, creating spaces that are both beautiful and practical. I evaluate designs based on user feedback, functionality, and the ability to evoke emotion. Common mistakes to avoid include overcomplicating designs and neglecting the user experience.
FS: How do you decide if your design is ready?
AC: I gauge readiness by assessing whether the design meets the project’s goals and aligns with client expectations. The moment I feel that all elements harmoniously come together and serve their intended purpose, I consider the design complete. While I believe designs can always be improved, knowing when to move forward is crucial to maintaining momentum in my work.
FS: What is your biggest design work?
AC: One of my proudest projects is "House of Solace," a compact home in Mumbai that beautifully marries functionality with elegance. My initial aspiration was to create a tranquil retreat amidst the city’s chaos. This project stands out due to its innovative use of space and custom features, reflecting my design philosophy. The challenges of working with limited space pushed my creativity, and I achieved significant satisfaction in delivering a design that resonates with the client.
FS: Who is your favourite designer?
AC: Alejandra Pombo and Benjamin Johnston, whose work I find particularly cool due to their attention to detail and willingness to experiment with bold palettes and textures. If I had the chance to talk to a single deceased designer, I would choose Jean Nouvel. His innovative approach to both architecture and interiors has always inspired me, and I would love to delve into his creative process and philosophy. In my opinion, the most iconic designer of all time is likely Charles and Ray Eames, as their work has profoundly influenced our understanding of good design through their iconic furniture and innovative ideas about functionality and aesthetics. Additionally, I believe that Dieter Rams created a significant impact in our understanding of good design, particularly with his principles of simplicity and sustainability. I also admire the work of Sameep Padora, as my foundational work and learnings began with him. His approach to design has greatly influenced my perspective. Furthermore, Rajiv Saini’s interior details and his thoughtful choices of colours, textures, and materials are aspects of his work that I truly appreciate.
FS: Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
AC: I draw inspiration from my surroundings, particularly the vibrant culture of Europe, as I am an avid traveller. Music plays a significant role in my creative process, often influencing my design work. I believe that good design is essential for societal advancement, as it enhances daily life and reflects cultural values. I continually strive to incorporate positive changes into my life through design, whether through mindful living spaces or community-focused projects.
FS: Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
AC: My work culture is collaborative and open-minded. I enjoy working with a team and value diverse perspectives. When selecting business partners, I look for individuals who share a commitment to quality and innovation. My philosophy revolves around transparency and communication, fostering an environment where creativity thrives. Key challenges in my profession include balancing client expectations with design integrity, but I view these as opportunities for growth.
FS: What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
AC: I believe in giving back to the community through pro bono design work and participating in initiatives that support underprivileged groups. I engage in mentoring young designers and actively participate in design events that promote social awareness. Supporting humanitarian projects aligns with my belief that design should serve a greater purpose and positively impact society.
FS: What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
AC: Participating in design awards like the A’ Design Award has provided invaluable exposure and networking opportunities. Three main benefits include gaining recognition for my work, connecting with industry leaders, and receiving constructive feedback that enhances my skills. Design competitions are crucial for fostering innovation and pushing designers to excel. I feel honoured to be recognized as the Designer of the Day, as it reflects my dedication to the craft and inspires me to continue evolving as a designer.
