Interview with Shu Wang at Saturday 4th of January 2025 ![]() FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? SW: My passion for creativity began at a young age, eventually leading me to pursue a degree in design. I always wanted to be in the creative field and design remains something I’m deeply passionate about and continue to explore enthusiastically. FS: What is "design" for you? SW: For me, design is finding the perfect balance between form, function, and material. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? SW: I enjoy creating designs that suggest function without prescribing it, creates a space for ‘open’ interpretations and invites users to engage with the work in their own way. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? SW: It was a cat feeding set I designed as a student during my undergraduate school. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? SW: At this point, my favorite materials are wood and metal. Due to the flexibility of those materials, I can bend, cut, joint, and apply different finishes to create things that are beautiful and functional. FS: When do you feel the most creative? SW: Typically during the evenings, I feel more relaxed and focused. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? SW: The balance between form and function. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? SW: Depends where I am in the design process. The beginning and end are usually exciting, the middle is often peacefully making progress, and sometimes frustrating when things don't go the way I expected. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? SW: Exciting, eager to see it being used and start thinking about how to make it better. FS: What makes a design successful? SW: I believe when a design fulfills the intention and can stand the test of time, the design can be called successful.
