Interview with Lucy Lago at Saturday 18th of May 2024
Liudmila Novokreshchina
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
LL: Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming an artist. I have come an incredible journey: I graduated from the department of graphic design, jewelry art and architecture. Art has always been the meaning of my life, it helped, inspired and was an incentive for the development of me as a person

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
LL: My studio is located on an incredibly beautiful island. Zakynthos, whose landscape influences the projects I create. The main task is to create projects that will be harmonious with nature.

FS: What is "design" for you?
LL: Design is a way of expressing my thoughts, philosophy of life, reflection of life experience. Design is a unique opportunity for the relationship between art and the functional world of things

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
LL: I love creating paintings, jewelry, sculptures, but most of all I love creating architectural projects. The idea that a family will live in the design I created and people will work inspires them to create unique projects.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
LL: I love every project I make, but Villa Thea has a special place in my heart. Perhaps because, I understand, the construction of such a facility depends on many factors.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
LL: My first design was a stone villa with a large pool and incredible views of the island. Zakynthos. It was an incredible experience as the villa reflected the traditional architecture of the island

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
LL: My favorite materials are a combination of concrete, wood and natural stone. At the moment I am very attracted to the technology of panel construction based on an individual project. It ensures the speed of construction and the calculation of many technical issues in advance.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
LL: For me, the creative process is about inspiration, which you shouldn’t wait for. I can be creative at any time of the day and at any time of the year. Of course, when I return from travel, the colors and cultures of other countries inspire new projects.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
LL: The first and most important aspect is getting to know the site where the project will be created, I always visit the site several times to understand the landscape, study the construction area and understand the best view. The first and most important aspect is getting to know the site where the project will be created, I always visit the site several times to understand the landscape, study the construction area and understand the best view. The next aspect is a careful study of the technical specifications and customer wishes. Then the creation process begins

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
LL: I am always inspired and looking forward to the result. Each project is individual and this only increases the interest of creation.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
LL: I feel that my child, whom I created with such love and care, has grown up, spread his wings and is ready to fly! I am very proud of the journey of each project.

FS: What makes a design successful?
LL: I always look first and foremost at design in the context of the environment and architecture around it. Also, the harmonious combination of materials and the color scheme of the project is very important to me. The design image must be holistic, starting from the functional scheme and ending with the details worked.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
LL: I always look first and foremost at design in the context of the environment and architecture around.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
LL: We create the world around us, and have a huge responsibility in front of society and environment to what it will be like.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
LL: I think we are on the right path, recently a lot of attention has been paid to the interaction of architecture and nature, as well as the role of technology in the creation process

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
LL: My last exhibition was in Italy, in the city of Condo, and I also took part in the Solerno Art Biennale 2023.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
LL: I am always inspired by nature. o Zakynthos is an endless source of inspiration, landscape, nature, sea, sun warm the soul and inspire to create unique projects

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
LL: I would describe it as biologically friendly with elements of minimalism and an emphasis on the beauty of the material

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
LL: I live in Zakynthos, Greece. This is an incredible country with a beautiful soul. Culture, religion, people, nature inspire the creation of successful projects.

FS: How do you work with companies?
LL: I have my team of builders and engineers with whom I work to create my projects, and I am also always open to cooperation with other companies

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
LL: It is necessary to create an image of what professional characteristics the candidate should have, the result of the search depends on this

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
LL: Work on creating a project begins with visiting the site and understanding the technical specifications, the next step is developing a sketch created by hand. After which I begin designing the object, working on creating a functional diagram

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
LL: Home, interior, bathroom, bed and kitchen

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
LL: The main thing I would like to wish is to believe in yourself! Keep your inner fire of love for beauty. Read, learn, learn more in the area that interests you. Don't be afraid to change and improve

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
LL: The profession of an architect is very interesting and the understanding that you can influence how the world will look in the future is inspiring, but in this profession there are many factors when implementing a project that do not depend on you

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
LL: Every project should be a wise reflection of the times

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
LL: I consider drawing, the ability to sculpt helps a lot in creating successful projects

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
LL: The most important thing is focus and organization. I create an action plan: I distribute what is the main task at the moment, and what can be done later.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
LL: The process of creating a project takes about 2 months, it includes the creation of plans, facades, sections, and 10 visualizations.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
LL: How did you decide to become an architect?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
LL: Working in a team on the construction of an architectural project. At the moment of construction, you understand that without the team, my project would never have seen the light of day and would have remained a beautiful picture

FS: Who are some of your clients?
LL: My clients are businessmen who understand how important it is to invest in design, since the design determines how successful a project will be in the real estate market

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
LL: I love working on functional space diagrams and 3D visualizations. Since it is during the development of these two stages that the overall image of the project is created.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
LL: I want to go international and create projects all over the world. I adore the cultures and traditions of different countries and I really want to see them reflected in architectural projects.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
LL: I develop the design myself. But I have a large team of engineers who help me take into account all the technical nuances when designing.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
LL: Yes, at the moment construction is underway on my new facility on the island. Zakynthos, in Greece. This is a two-storey villa with a basement and a swimming pool with incredible sea views. In this project, I tried to integrate the architectural image into the surrounding nature as much as possible.

FS: How can people contact you?
LL: People can contact me using the contact form on www.lucylago.com or call me on +306972560019. I will also be glad to see everyone on my Instagram page
