Interview with Pinar Eren at Tuesday 2nd of July 2024

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
PE: Yes, I always wanted to, designing and producing something is good for the soul..

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
PE: Our office is a great place to use, we can both produce and customers can come and see.

FS: What is "design" for you?
PE: Design involves decisions about how something will look, how it will work, and how it will be produced, taking into account aesthetics, functionality, ergonomics, and user needs.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
PE: coffee table, pouffe, chair... I like to produce furniture that can be easily moved around the house, they are both sustainable and easy to function anywhere.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
PE: Queen bench, I started this business with it. While I was designing it, I had an empty space at the entrance of my own house, so I started thinking about it... It was useful and very stylish.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
PE: The thing I designed for a company is a pouf. I have poufs in many offices.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
PE: My favorite material is the combination of marble and leather..

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
PE: I love working in the evenings... I always sit in front of the computer at midnight and I love to scribble with a pen and paper next to me.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
PE: be functional and sustainable.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
PE: I'm happy

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
PE: I experience an indescribable feeling when people I don't know share their pictures. When the finished products arrive in front of me, I say I did this and it's done :)

FS: What makes a design successful?
PE: I always say functionality..

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
PE: I do not evaluate any design as good or bad, every design has been produced with effort.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
PE: its stance, the appeal of its products…

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
PE: Design means infinity. It is very difficult to express something that is infinite. Designs are getting further and further each year, they are magnificent.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
PE: I've never had an exhibition.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
PE: We always draw and scribble with my children and then we build models. I love painting at home and combining and separating things.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
PE: My designs reflect me, simple, elegant and timeless.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
PE: Türkiye Istanbul… My designs do not appeal to our cultural structure. I create my designs in line with the materials and the deficiencies in the spaces. But Istanbul is a very cosmopolitan city, crowded traffic noise, these have a place in my designs... We do not value the deficiencies as designers, there is too much copying :)

FS: How do you work with companies?
PE: Visuals of the space are sent to us, then we create office furniture suitable for that space, and this is personalized.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
PE: hard work and time... If a person really works and puts in effort without any time, then some effort is required for that person.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
PE: Actually, there is no time period... Sometimes we even make changes to the product while it is being produced.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
PE: chair, bench, coffee table, picture, armchair…

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
PE: The most meaningful and important day for me is when I established my brand and produced my products patiently and in Turkey. The day I went to meet with one of the most important stores... I walked in the door and said I would be here and it happened... I worked on the brand for 1 year and my only goal was to be in Beymen. I bought the products and went. As a result, we have been working for 3 years and I produce for them and nothing can be happier than this. .

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
PE: They should not be afraid... After I graduated, I started a family and then started my business... But I believe that if I had started this business after graduating, my name would have been known in many countries... They should start producing without fear and not wondering if this will happen, but saying "This happened, I did it."

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
PE: There is nothing negative about producing. We produce and I think this is a great thing.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
PE: Timelessness... Furniture thrown away because they got bored and out of fashion... I feel very sad.. Timeless and sustainability..

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
PE: being able to draw…j

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
PE: autocad, sketchup programs... But I have a small bag notebook and a veteran pen, the first touches are made with that pen, then it turns into digital.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
PE: It's a part of my life. Sometimes I see a vase or a broken piece of marble, then a stand for it, or a coffee table with a piece of wood on top of it... It doesn't take any time anyway, it's in my life.A

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
PE: sometimes 1 hour, sometimes 1 month, sometimes 1 year.. It's about the product you designed..

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
PE: We constantly play with the color changes of the designed products :)

FS: What was your most important job experience?
PE: We designed a gynecology center… It was great fun from start to finish. I have 2 children and we did a clinic with my children's doctor. It was a very enjoyable and different experience.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
PE: I don't know many of my customers, they reach me through the store. But then we become like family. Being a guest in their home is a very nice process.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
PE: I like to produce very useful movable furniture for home and workplace. The best thing is to produce products rather than designing a space...

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
PE: I don't make plans... I leave it to time and it chooses the most suitable time for me... That's what happened in this competition...

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
PE: I have a team but it's just for a project, I make my designs myself and I don't want anyone else.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
PE: I have created many products right now, but I have a product in mind... The materials are certain: leather and metal-brass... but it is difficult to cut and combine, so we have some time. Sometimes drawing is not enough, it takes time to cut and assemble the product..

FS: How can people contact you?
PE: I meet with my customers directly, I have an assistant, but people come to me and I love dealing with them directly. They can reach you directly via the internet and Instagram.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
PE: No, no, they are very good questions to explain ourselves, thank you.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
