Interview with Nisreen Hashish at Thursday 2nd of May 2024 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? NH: My journey into art and design began with a deep appreciation for creativity and aesthetics. From a young age, I was drawn to the world of design, fascinated by its ability to shape environments and evoke emotions. While I didn't always envision myself as a designer, my passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces eventually led me to pursue a career in the field. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? NH: NHDesigns is more than just a design studio; it's a creative hub where innovation meets inspiration. Our company is dedicated to crafting captivating spaces that blend modern Egyptian architecture with timeless elegance. With a team of talented professionals and a commitment to excellence, NHDesigns strives to exceed client expectations and leave a lasting impact on the world of design. FS: What is "design" for you? NH: Design, to me, is the art of problem-solving with a touch of creativity. It's about finding innovative solutions to challenges while also creating something visually stunning and impactful. Design is not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality, sustainability, and above all, storytelling. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? NH: I find myself most drawn to designing spaces that challenge the status quo and push the boundaries of creativity. Whether it's reimagining traditional architecture or infusing modern elements into historic structures, I thrive on projects that allow me to innovate and inspire. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? NH: My favorite design is one that holds a special place in my heart - a residential project that seamlessly blends traditional Egyptian motifs with contemporary design elements. It reflects my passion for preserving heritage while also embracing the future of architecture. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? NH: The first project I designed for a company was a commercial space that required a complete overhaul of its interior design. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience that allowed me to showcase my creativity and problem-solving skills. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? NH: My favorite material is undoubtedly wood. Its versatility, warmth, and natural beauty make it the perfect canvas for creative expression. As for technology, I'm particularly fond of 3D modeling software, which allows me to bring my designs to life with stunning realism. FS: When do you feel the most creative? NH: I feel most creative when I'm surrounded by nature or exploring new cultures and experiences. Traveling, visiting art galleries, and immersing myself in different environments all fuel my creativity and inspire fresh ideas. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? NH: During the design process, I focus on balancing form and function, ensuring that every element serves a purpose while also contributing to the overall aesthetic. Attention to detail is key, as I believe it's the little things that truly elevate a design. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? NH: When I design, I experience a range of emotions - excitement, passion, and sometimes even a hint of apprehension. There's a certain thrill that comes with bringing an idea to life and seeing it evolve into something tangible. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? NH: Seeing my designs realized fills me with a sense of pride and satisfaction. It's incredibly rewarding to witness the impact that my work has on people's lives and the joy it brings to those who experience it. FS: What makes a design successful? NH: A successful design is one that seamlessly integrates form and function, captivates the imagination, and leaves a lasting impression. It's about creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also enhance the lives of those who inhabit them. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? NH: When judging a design, I first consider its functionality and how well it meets the needs of its users. I also look at the level of innovation, attention to detail, and overall aesthetic appeal. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? NH: As a designer, I believe it's my responsibility to create spaces that not only enhance quality of life but also contribute positively to society and the environment. This means prioritizing sustainability, inclusivity, and social responsibility in every aspect of the design process. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? NH: The design field is constantly evolving, driven by advancements in technology, changes in consumer behavior, and shifting cultural trends. The future of design lies in embracing innovation, sustainability, and human-centered design principles. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? NH: My last exhibition was held two years ago at a prestigious art gallery in Cairo. As for future exhibitions, I'm currently exploring opportunities to showcase my latest works on an international stage. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? NH: Design inspiration can come from anywhere - nature, art, architecture, culture, even everyday experiences. I feed my creativity by immersing myself in diverse environments, seeking out new experiences, and constantly challenging myself to think outside the box. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? NH: My design style is characterized by a harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements, with a focus on elegance, sophistication, and functionality. I'm drawn to clean lines, natural materials, and timeless aesthetics, which I believe transcend trends and stand the test of time. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? NH: I live in Cairo, Egypt, where the rich cultural heritage of my country serves as a constant source of inspiration. While living here offers a deep connection to tradition and history, it also presents challenges in terms of navigating bureaucracy and infrastructure limitations. FS: How do you work with companies? NH: I work closely with companies to understand their needs, goals, and vision for each project. Collaboration is key, as I believe in creating spaces that reflect the values and identity of the organization while also pushing the boundaries of design. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? NH: My suggestion to companies looking to work with a designer is to prioritize communication, collaboration, and creativity. Choose a designer who not only has the technical skills and expertise but also shares your vision and values. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? NH: My design process begins with thorough research and analysis, followed by conceptualization and ideation. I then develop detailed sketches and 3D models to bring the design to life, refining it through collaboration and feedback until it meets the client's vision. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? NH: Some of my favorite design items at home include a vintage armchair inherited from my grandmother, a handcrafted wooden dining table, a contemporary art piece by a local artist, a Persian rug passed down through generations, and a sleek minimalist lamp. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? NH: A typical day in my life involves a mix of design work, meetings with clients and collaborators, site visits, and creative brainstorming sessions. I start my day with a cup of coffee and some quiet reflection before diving into whatever projects are on my plate. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? NH: For young designers, I would offer this advice: never stop learning, stay curious, and trust your instincts. Don't be afraid to take risks and think outside the box. And above all, remember that passion and perseverance are the keys to success in this field. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? NH: Some positives of being a designer include the ability to express creativity, make a positive impact on people's lives, and constantly learn and grow. On the flip side, it can be challenging to balance artistic vision with practical constraints and navigate the competitive nature of the industry. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? NH: My "golden rule" in design is to always prioritize the user experience. Whether designing a space, product, or interface, putting the needs and preferences of the end user first ensures that the design resonates on a deeper level and creates meaningful connections. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? NH: The most important skills for a designer include creativity, problem-solving, communication, attention to detail, and technical proficiency. These skills enable designers to bring their ideas to life and create impactful experiences for users. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? NH: My toolbox includes a mix of traditional and digital tools, including sketchbooks, pencils, 3D modeling software, Adobe Creative Suite, reference books, and online resources for inspiration and research. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? NH: Managing time effectively is crucial in design, and I do so by setting clear goals, prioritizing tasks, and breaking projects down into manageable chunks. I also make use of project management tools and techniques to stay organized and on track. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? NH: The time it takes to design an object from beginning to end can vary greatly depending on the complexity of the project, scope of work, and client requirements. Some projects may take weeks or even months, and some projects may take several years to complete. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? NH: One of the most frequently asked questions I receive as a designer is about my design process and how I approach different projects. FS: What was your most important job experience? NH: My most important job experience was working on a large-scale architectural project that challenged me both creatively and professionally. It taught me valuable lessons about teamwork, problem-solving, and the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges. FS: Who are some of your clients? NH: My clients include residential homeowners of all sizes, commercial businesses (Offices and Retail), hospitality companies (Hotels, Cruise ships and Hotel Apartments), and cultural institutions, each with their own unique needs and vision for their space. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? NH: I enjoy all types of design work, but I'm particularly drawn to projects that allow me to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. Whether it's designing a modern residence, a cultural institution, or a commercial space, I thrive on the opportunity to create something truly special. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? NH: My future plans involve continuing to push the boundaries of design, exploring new opportunities for collaboration and innovation, and making a positive impact on the world through my work. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? NH: I believe in a collaborative approach to design, often working closely with a team of architects, engineers, artists, and other professionals to bring a project to life. While I may develop the initial concept and vision, collaboration is essential to ensuring that the final design meets the needs and expectations of all stakeholders. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? NH: I have several works-in-progress that I'm excited about, including a residential project that blends traditional architecture with modern design elements, a cultural institution that celebrates Egypt's rich heritage, and a commercial space that prioritizes sustainability and innovation.
