Interview with Pavit Gujral at Tuesday 13th of June 2023
Pavit Gujral
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
PG: Being born in a country vastly rich in culture and art has had a major influence on my inclination towards design. Since a very young age, I knew that I was going to be in the design industry, especially shoes. However, my love for gemstones and colour drove me towards Jewellery and I went on to pursue my Graduate gemmologist degree at the renowned Gemmological Institute of America, New York. I have a very strong bond and love for nature and animals and they have majorly influenced my designs. As a person I am drawn towards things that are unique & trendsetting and the same characteristics can be seen in my designs. All the pieces are bold, inspired and bespoke.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
PG: My company was established in 2016 after I completed by Gemology at GIA, New York. My design studio ‘Pavit Gujral Designs’ is based in Dubai Design District, Dubai. One can visit by appointment and have a customised experience. We strive to create bespoke, trendsetting jewelry pieces of the highest quality.

FS: What is "design" for you?
PG: Design is Emotions. I am a person who feels deeply and my emotions inspire me to create designs. Each piece that I create has a memory, a story and feelings I felt in that moment.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
PG: Nature and Animals are my biggest inspiration and I love creating pieces that are playful & colorful and speak to you. I like every piece to be unique, trendsetting and bold. Being a Gemologist, rare and unique colored stones are my biggest focus while designing. All my pieces have a lot of attention to detail and finish.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
PG: My favorite piece is the ‘Crab’ Earrings. They are among my favorite pieces which I enjoyed creating. The award-winning Crab Earrings have been set in 18K Gold with over 800 pieces of Orange Sapphires, Pink Sapphires, Yellow Sapphires and Rubies creating an ombre effect. The piece is finished with beautiful deep blue heart brilliant Tanzanites and round brilliant Diamonds. As totems, Crabs are symbols of intuitive nature, perseverance, self-sufficient behaviour and sensitivity! The earrings are very dynamic and display movement due to the setting technique. The Crabs are balancing beautiful Tanzanite hearts with their claws! Recently in the month of February 2023, the “Crab Earrings” won the WINNER in the category “High Jewelry of the Year” at the most prestigious award in Europe, INHORGENTA AWARD 2023 in Munich.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
PG: “The Hummingbird” Necklace was the first piece that I ever manufactured inspired from the Hummingbird’s wings. The Award-Winning Necklace has been set in 18K Gold with Rubies on one wing and Diamonds on the other. Both the wings meet at the beautiful centre stone, a 25.74cts oval brilliant Kunzite, flanked by trillion Rubies. Seen as healers and bringers of love, good luck and joy, Hummingbirds reflect the positive side of life by showing you the joy in small things. The Hummingbird puts an emphasis on the importance of honouring the small things in life! The Hummingbird is tireless in its pursuit of finding sweetness and reminds you to not let obstacles stop you from making your dreams come true. Their iridescence is just magical! The beautiful bird is also a part of my brand and logo for the same reasons.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
PG: Being a gemologist, I love gemstones that are rare, rich and colourful, regardless of their value. I have a special inclination towards phenomenal gemstones; those that portray some kind of special characteristics due to their chemical compositions or inclusions, such as colour change in alexandrite and play of colour in opal. All my pieces are created in 18K and each stone is set by hand. Because I love pavé setting, some of my pieces even have over 4000 set by hand!

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
PG: I feel the most creative when I travel. When I see new horizons, new creatures, the wonders of marine life and nature’s phenomenon. I believe travel removes us from our usual ranges of familiarity and rouses us to see, taste and attempt new things. It continually challenges us, not exclusively to adjust to and investigate new environmental elements, yet in addition to draw in with various individuals, to embrace undertakings really to impart new and significant encounters to companions and friends and family. Travelling has inspired many of my designs, such as the ‘Iceberg Collection’ is inspired from my trip to Finland, the ‘Twilight Collection’ is inspired from a breathtaking view of the twilight sky in Canada and the Award-winning ‘Tuscany’ earrings also been inspired from my summer trip to the beautiful Italian town of Tuscany.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
PG: My designs are inspired from Nature's bounty and beauty. Every piece tells a story. Along with this, Mixology of Colour spectrum, my Love for Exotic Gemstones, Profound connection with the Animal Kingdom and Beauty in Randomness of Shapes are the aspects kept in mind while designing.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
PG: Happy, inspired and lively.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
PG: I feel elated and triumphant. A lot of effort goes into bringing a piece to life, sourcing the ideal stones and overcoming certain challenges. With each piece that I create, comes a new learning!

FS: What makes a design successful?
PG: I feel as long as you’re true to your design and create a truly bold and inspired piece, without fearing the outcome of it being liked, is when a design is successful. The piece should speak to you! And of course, the piece should be flawless and comfortable to wear.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
PG: Firstly, it is very important that my designs make the wearer feel confident and happy, regardless of their nationality, age or gender. Just because a piece is bold, doesn’t mean it is only for young people or some flamboyant personality! All the gemstones sourced should be conflict free.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
PG: I think people are expressing more freely now, without fearing what the society might think! Our lives and emotions are surely becoming more complex and people are finding ways to express themselves beautifully by creating art!

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
PG: I have five essential elements which describe my design style. Mixology of colour spectrum, Love for exotic gemstones, Inspired by nature’s bounty and beauty, profound connection with the animal kingdom and beauty in randomness of shapes. My approach has always been bold, bespoke and opulent.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
PG: I am based out in Dubai, however, I am from India. Born in Calcutta, and raised in Chandigarh, I had exposure to two completely different and unique cultures. Calcutta is all about art, history, and chaos, whereas Chandigarh is a relatively modern and well-planned city. Both cities have played an important role in inculcating my interest in art and design.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
PG: Be Bold. Don’t follow the trend. Just design what comes to mind. Following a trend will never allow you to have your own style.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
PG: Be bold and honest in your expression of design.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
PG: It really depends upon the complexity of the design. It can vary from 8-12 weeks.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
PG: I develop my designs myself. I am the CEO and head designer of my company "Pavit Gujral Designs".

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
PG: Moving to Dubai and the Middle East has inspired me to work on a collection based on the Arab World. I am conceptualizing the new collection by taking inspiration from the Arab culture, colors, scripture, topography, animals, and, of course, the desert!

FS: How can people contact you?
PG: My fans and clients are most welcome to interact with me on my social media handles, such as my Instagram page- Pavit Gujral Design(https://www.instagram.com/pavitgujraldesigns/?hl=en) , Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/PavitGujralDesigns/) and my personal LinkedIn profile ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/pavit-gujral-192a1883/).
