Interview with Qian Wan at Sunday 7th of May 2023
Qian Wan
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
QW: I fostered a deep-seated ardor for design and art. As I embarked on my academic journey, I delved into the realm of industrial design, which steadily kindled my fascination for the digital sphere and technological advancements. It was through this exploration that I stumbled upon the captivating realm of UX/product design (Product Designer)—a discipline that harmoniously amalgamates my innate creativity with an earnest aspiration to forge products that engender social welfare. Nurturing my expertise and honing my skills, I embarked on various consequential projects, ultimately culminating in my current vocation as a proficient UX/product designer, wherein I harness the power of design to effect positive change within society.

FS: What is "design" for you?
QW: Design, to me, is the art and practice of crafting purposeful and meaningful solutions. It encompasses the thoughtful integration of aesthetics, functionality, and user experience to create products, services, and experiences that enhance people's lives. Design goes beyond visual appeal; it involves problem-solving, empathy, and innovation. It is about understanding the needs and aspirations of users, anticipating their challenges, and creating solutions that address those needs with elegance and efficiency. Design is a powerful tool that has the ability to shape and improve our world, fostering positive experiences, and driving positive change.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
QW: I find great pleasure in engaging with design within the digital realm, particularly when it comes to crafting captivating experiences for mobile applications and desktop interfaces. Collaborating closely with clients is something I truly relish, as it allows me to shape user-centered designs that prioritize the needs and desires of the end-users. By placing the user at the heart of the design process, I am able to create intuitive and seamless experiences that resonate with their expectations and preferences. This iterative approach not only fosters strong connections with customers but also ensures the development of products that truly cater to their needs.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
QW: One of my most cherished design endeavors is my acclaimed project called "Ling," a mobile-based chatbot designed to provide inclusive support. "Ling" has garnered numerous international design accolades, including a prestigious gold award from the Muse Awards, recognition as an Arcturus Winner from the Vega Digital Awards, multiple gold awards from the Indigo Awards, and an esteemed Iron A’ Design Award. I hold a special affinity for this project as I was able to independently see it through from its conceptualization to its execution. Notably, the project revolves around the theme of inclusion and carries a profound social impact.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
QW: The inaugural design project I undertook within my company was none other than the renowned GEICO Mobile App. This exceptional endeavor garnered significant recognition, as it triumphed in securing the esteemed People's Voice Award at the highly regarded Webby Awards. In addition, the Keynova Group bestowed upon it the distinguished title of the top-ranking application. Witnessing the substantial influence my contributions had on GEICO's overall prosperity, market standing, and visibility fills me with immense satisfaction. Undoubtedly, the resounding triumph of the GEICO Mobile App product played a pivotal role in achieving these remarkable outcomes

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
QW: AI. AI can assist in designing for accessibility by automating the process of identifying and addressing accessibility issues. It can help designers ensure that their designs are inclusive and accessible to a broader range of users, regardless of their abilities.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
QW: During the design process, I prioritize a holistic approach that considers multiple aspects of a design. However, there are 2 key areas I’d like to focus Innovation and Creativity: Encouraging innovation and creativity is vital for generating unique and impactful designs. I explore novel solutions, experiment with new ideas, and seek opportunities to push boundaries and challenge conventions. Social Impact and Sustainability: I believe in the power of design to make a positive difference in society. I consider the social impact of a design, striving to create solutions that promote inclusivity, sustainability, and ethical practices.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
QW: I am thrilled to embark on a new project, where I eagerly embrace the opportunity to not only understand but also empathize with the end-users. I wholeheartedly strive to delve into their needs, emotions, and perspectives. This empathetic connection allows me to cultivate a genuine sense of compassion, propelling me to create designs that deeply resonate with and effectively serve the intended audience.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
QW: Sense of achievement

FS: What makes a design successful?
QW: Impact. A truly successful design makes a positive impact. It solves a problem, fulfills a need, or brings about positive change in society. It may promote sustainability, inclusivity, or address pressing social issues.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
QW: I have had the honor of serving as a design judge in esteemed international competitions, including TreeHacks and TechTogether. Throughout my experience, one principle that I hold dear, and I consider crucial for both design and non-design projects, is the concept of impact. Whether it be in terms of business or social significance, I firmly believe that making a meaningful impact is paramount.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
QW: Ethical considerations: Designers should uphold ethical standards and consider the potential social and environmental consequences of their designs. They should promote transparency, fairness, and social equity, avoiding practices that harm individuals or exploit the environment.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
