Interview with Cheng Han Wu at Wednesday 14th of June 2023
Cheng Han Wu
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CHW: I like to use vertical and horizontal combinations a lot when scribbling, as well as stacking layers in a space. This made me realize my love for spatial variation and start studying architecture. I have always tried to embody this interest as a designer by learning about living and using space to create beauty. This interest has enriched my life and helped others to live better lives. I believe this is what drives me as a designer.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CHW: The core concept of INOTION is to focus on giving meaning and concept to space. We focus on the design of interior space, architectural space and self-built buildings, and undertake commissioned tasks for various design projects. Our goal is to provide a full range of design services, execute project commissions, integrate architectural, interior and commercial design, and provide creative and professional design services.

FS: What is "design" for you?
CHW: Space is the extension of life activities, design concept is the thinking expression of life attitude, and life creates unique and harmonious aesthetics. The purpose of the design is to integrate these elements to produce a comprehensive effect and response.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CHW: Through conceptually defined works, use concise design language to solve problems, and pursue a balance and effective processing method in terms of practicality and aesthetics.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CHW: The simplest space design is to create a clean, uncluttered space with no frills by streamlining and simplifying elements. It pursues a simple and clear form language, emphasizing functionality and practicality, making the space appear simple and powerful.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CHW: We promote the use of environmentally friendly materials such as sustainable wood, low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints and coatings, and recycled materials. These materials not only reduce environmental impact, but also provide healthier indoor air quality. At the same time, we also use virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology platforms to improve discussion efficiency and make design discussions more intuitive and effective. In addition, we use modular construction and finishing systems, such as prefabricated wall panels and modular cabinets, to increase construction efficiency, reduce waste, and facilitate assembly and maintenance. Finally, we also actively integrate intelligent control systems to provide more convenient and energy-saving functions for indoor spaces. These practices not only pursue environmental protection, but also improve the quality of living, creating a more comfortable and sustainable indoor environment for people.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
CHW: Through travel, you can be creative in a state of relaxation and self-reflection. Give yourself some stimulating and relaxing time in a different environment than usual, so that your body and mind can relax, your thoughts will flow more smoothly, and it will help stimulate creative inspiration. At the same time, in quiet moments, new perspectives and insights can be found, which can help inspire creativity and generate new ideas. Through travel, you can break the daily framework and explore new cultures and environments. Such experiences can enrich your thinking and provide a rich and inspiring background for the emergence of creativity. At the same time, through moments of tranquility, being able to focus more on self-reflection and finding new perspectives and insights can help spark creativity and open up new ideas.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CHW: We focus on multiple aspects of design to ensure comprehensiveness and excellence, including: 1. Functionality: Ensuring that the design meets the needs and purposes of the user, providing effective functionality and practicality. 2. Aesthetics: Focus on the visual appeal and aesthetics of the design to create a pleasing environment. 3. Sustainability: pay attention to environmental impact, use sustainable materials and technologies, and reduce resource consumption and environmental pollution. 4. User experience: the design provides a good user experience, including comfort, ease of use, and safety. 5. Innovation: Pursue innovation and uniqueness, and look for new design concepts and solutions. These aspects work together to ensure the design is at its best, meeting people's needs and creating superior design work.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CHW: Emotions in the design process are changeable and complex. Designers may experience challenges, passion, meticulousness, excitement, and anxiety in different stages and situations. Each emotion has a specific influence on the progress and outcome of the design.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
CHW: When the design work can meet the needs and expectations, the designer will feel the pursuit and satisfaction of creating valuable and meaningful design work.

FS: What makes a design successful?
CHW: Considering the factors such as functionality, aesthetics, innovation, sustainability, user experience, adaptability and variability, and achieving a balance in these aspects can make the design successful and bring real value and satisfaction to users.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
CHW: Concepts and ideas are based on a spiritual level above the fulfillment of basic needs. A worthy design should be able to express itself and communicate its meaning.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
CHW: Designers have important responsibilities to society and the environment. They should be oriented towards sustainability and social responsibility to create design solutions that meet human needs and respect the environment. Designers should consider efficient use of resources, energy efficiency, reduction of waste and pollutant generation, and creating designs that engage with communities and cultures. They should focus on human well-being, pursue social justice and inclusion, and try their best to meet the needs of different groups of people. Designers should also actively promote the dissemination and application of sustainable design concepts, lead the development of the industry, and promote the sustainable development of society and the environment.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
CHW: The future of design will be diverse, technology-driven and socially oriented. Designers need to continuously learn, innovate and adapt to changes, and apply design thinking in various fields to promote social progress and improve people's quality of life.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CHW: There are multiple sources of inspiration, including observation and research, travel and exploration, multiple thinking and communication, learning and continuing education, etc. It's important to keep an open mind and keep observing, learning and exploring to enrich your creativity and design abilities.
