Interview with Huizi Tian at Sunday 23rd of April 2023 FS: What is "design" for you? HT: Design is what I have been working on, and it’s also the way I realize my self-value. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? HT: I’d like to design something related to my research, using design as way to express some social issues. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? HT: I pay more attention to design something which can be finished completely. Sometimes I come up with good ideals, but there are various limitations make things impossible to pull off, so when I design a project, I care about feasibility first. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? HT: To realize my own design is something I have been looking forward to. After completing one project, I will look forward to the realization of the next one. This anticipation solved most of my anxiety. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? HT: I’m not good at judging the quality of a design rationally, such as in-depth analysis of its creativity or research of its concept. I prefer to pay more attention to the overall sense of the picture at the first glance. I think design is to convey the audience with works, rather than understand the content through text interpretation, and I think the overall effect of the picture is the most important thing to reflect the design and aesthetic skills. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? HT: My design inspiration comes from details in daily life. Additionally, when my inspiration is exhausted, I often read some papers. Through the understanding of other fields unrelated to design, usually I will have some interesting inspirations. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? HT: I think the most important thing for a designer is to cultivate the sense of beauty. Aesthetics can help a design be visually correct. Therefore, we need to see more, think more, and accumulate the sense of beauty all the time. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? HT: I think the most important thing is the ability to capture information and process information. Mastering this ability helps us get ideas for design quickly. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? HT: There is no definite answer to the question of this question, but I know that good design must take time to settle. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? HT: I'm supposed to do a visual book about time perception, which entirely written and designed by myself. FS: How can people contact you? HT: My Email address is istianhz@gmail.com.
