Interview with Fatima Dahmani at Tuesday 8th of August 2023
Fatima Dahmani
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
FD: I have a background in science and a strong passion for technology. During my childhood vacations abroad, I discovered the art of Islamic geometric patterns and became captivated by their intricate and mesmerizing designs. In 2017, I decided to combine my artistic heritage with my knowledge of innovative design and 3D printing technologies. As a self-taught creator, I launched the jewelry brand Moucharabieh and furthered my skills in jewelry making and 3D design at the Haute École de Joaillerie in Paris. In 2023 Moucharabieh becomes fatima Dahmani jewelry designer.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
FD: Fatima Dahmani jewelry is a jewelry brand that focuses on creating contemporary jewelry inspired by Oriental influences. It represents a fusion of traditional heritage and innovative design. The brand incorporates cutting-edge 3D modeling and printing techniques to push the boundaries of traditional jewelry making. I collaborate with French and Belgian artisans to produce high-end jewelry pieces.

FS: What is "design" for you?
FD: For me, design is a harmonious blend of creativity, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. It is the process of translating ideas and inspirations into tangible and visually appealing forms. Design goes beyond mere aesthetics; it encompasses thoughtful problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to evoke emotions through artistic expression.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
FD: I particularly enjoy designing jewelry pieces that merge traditional Oriental influences with modern aesthetics. By incorporating Islamic geometric patterns and exploring the possibilities of 3D design, I strive to create jewelry that is both timeless and innovative. I find joy in crafting pieces that allow individuals to express their unique personality and style.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
FD: The first thing I designed for my jewelry brand was the DEAR ORIENT collection, contemporary collection that incorporated Islamic geometric patterns. I wanted to create pieces that celebrated the beauty of Oriental influences . These designs laid the foundation for the unique aesthetic of Moucharabieh.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
FD: As a jewelry designer, my favorite materials are precious metals like gold and silver. These materials have a timeless appeal and can be shaped and crafted to bring my designs to life. In terms of technology, I'm particularly fond of 3D design and printing. It allows me to explore intricate patterns and create complex jewelry pieces with precision.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
FD: I feel the most creative when I'm immersed in the design process, especially during the initial stages of conceptualization. Exploring various inspirations, sketching ideas, and experimenting with different design elements fuel my creativity. I also find inspiration in nature, art, and cultural heritage, which often sparks new ideas and perspectives.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
FD: As a jewelry designer, I focus on balancing heritage and innovation in my designs. I strive to create pieces that are both timeless and modern, incorporating Oriental influences with contemporary design elements. Additionally, I pay attention to the intricate details and craftsmanship involved in the creation of each piece, ensuring that every aspect of the design is meticulously crafted.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
FD: When I design, I feel a sense of excitement and inspiration. The process of bringing together traditional Oriental influences with innovative design techniques is both exhilarating and fulfilling. It allows me to express my creativity and passion for jewelry design, creating pieces that evoke a sense of elegance and audacity.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
FD: Seeing my designs come to life is a gratifying experience. It fills me with a sense of pride and accomplishment to witness the transformation from a concept to a tangible piece of jewelry. The realization of my designs evokes a mix of joy, satisfaction, and anticipation, knowing that these creations will be appreciated and cherished by others.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
FD: When evaluating a design, I consider several aspects. Firstly, I assess the overall aesthetic appeal and visual impact of the piece. Then, I focus on the level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the quality of materials used. Lastly, I evaluate the coherence of the design with the brand's identity.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
