Interview with Nan Hu at Friday 17th of June 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
NH: Love design, the major chosen by the university is design.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
NH: The studio is mainly engaged in cultural and creative product design and poster design.The work of the studio has won many awards in design competitions and has been exhibited in many countries.

FS: What is "design" for you?
NH: Design can have an impact on others. In particular, poster design can let people know more about the truth.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
NH: I like posters best. Because it is concise and easy to understand.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
NH: I like the anti war posters of Japanese designers best. A profound reflection on war is conducive to world peace.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
NH: Poster.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
NH: I like paper materials best. It gives people an approachable feeling.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
NH: At night. A quiet environment is conducive to creation.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
NH: Whether the design works have a bad impact on people or the environment. Whether it has damaged the ecological environment, etc.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
NH: Excited. A work from my own creative idea deserves my excitement.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
NH: Excited.

FS: What makes a design successful?
NH: Understand the real needs of customers.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
NH: Whether the design works have a bad impact on the environment.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
NH: Designers should protect the environment.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
NH: The future of design is hard to say, but works that love the environment and call for peace should be encouraged.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
NH: The last exhibition was held in Nantong, China in May. The next exhibition is uncertain.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
NH: Pay more attention to people's needs.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
NH: My work is generally simple style. Can make people easier to understand.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
NH: Influential. Many people in our country draw design inspiration from cultural heritage.

FS: How do you work with companies?
NH: Design according to the requirements provided by the company.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
NH: Look at the designer's portfolio.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
NH: Check some data during design to avoid repeated design.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
NH: Italian furniture, including tables, chairs, etc.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
NH: Most of the day is spent at work with little rest time.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
NH: I am also a young designer. My suggestion is to learn more good design works.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
NH: The positive aspect is that design activities are fun. The negative aspect is that it is sometimes difficult to understand customer needs.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
NH: Ardently love

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
NH: Computer painting

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
NH: Rhinoceros design software, Photoshop, etc.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
NH: Make time planning and do things as planned.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
NH: About a month

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
NH: How to get design inspiration?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
NH: Set up a design studio and teach design related courses in the school.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
NH: Some local companies.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
NH: I like poster design. Because poster design can let people know more about the truth.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
NH: Take part in some design competitions to meet more excellent designers.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
NH: We have a design team.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
NH: Not currently.

FS: How can people contact you?
NH: Generally, they use telephone or wechat.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
NH: Not currently.
