Interview with Yuhang Chen

Home > Designer Interviews > Yuhang Chen

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Yuhang Chen (YC) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Yuhang Chen by clicking here.

Interview with Yuhang Chen at Tuesday 17th of May 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
YC: I graduated from the Department of Product Design of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Branch. When I was a child, I especially liked to draw the outline of some objects. I think the shape of each thing conveys its character, whether it is gentle or excited. I like to create new forms and new experiences, so I became a product designer. I think I'll keep working on product design and keep loving it. I graduated from the Department of Product Design of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Branch. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
YC: A weird but interesting lamp

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
YC: metal, glass, ceramic, leather

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
YC: I think I'm most creative when I'm alone on the comfy sofa and blowing the breeze

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
YC: Excited and apprehensive, because I am eager to be recognized by users.

FS: What makes a design successful?
YC: I think successful designs should be beautiful, easy to use and desired by users. The beauty of a product depends on the designer's aesthetics and direct perception of life; ease of use depends on the designer's thinking on how to implement functions; whether users need a product depends on whether the designer understands trends and users' lives Way.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
YC: Does it create value for users.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
YC: I think designers should consider whether the production of the product is environmentally friendly as much as possible while meeting the commercial interests of the company. We should pay more attention to long-term interests, and companies that are friendly to the environment and society are always more recognized by users.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
YC: My inspiration comes from everything I've been through, from my anatomy of life.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
YC: I often use decomposition and refactoring to reason about the styling of my designs. When I'm designing, I'm not in a rush to determine its shape. I think more about what it should look like and how it should interact with the user. When I think about this, the big picture of a product is already sketched out. Next, I will choose one of the approximate modes to optimize. In the process of optimization, I will browse a lot of images according to the emotional keywords I want to express to users, and reconstruct my current design by breaking down their design language.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
YC: Find a designer with passion, whether he has extensive experience or not.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
YC: My God, I am a young designer! I long for the guidance of my seniors.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
YC: I always work in the afternoon, study and browse good design work in the morning and evening.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
YC: One months or a year, depending on the complexity of the product

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
YC: How should styling be reasoned? How can product features be needed by users?

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
YC: I would go to a bigger multinational company and then go on to further my studies.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
YC: I work for an independent audio brand.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
YC: I already have a very interesting idea, and unlike the X-BOAT PRO, it is more complicated and interesting to take out the headphones.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
