Interview with Seyed Ahmad Beheshti at Thursday 3rd of November 2022
Seyed Ahmad Beheshti
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
SAB: As a child, I loved observing creative designs and was always amazed by how brands were using creativity to communicate with their potential customers through advertising and design. I believe it was when I realized I wanted to be a creative designer in the advertising industry. I was fortunate to find my passion at such early age. I feel lucky to have one of the best vocational high schools in my city Isfahan, and I could get a Graphic Design diploma from it at the age of 17.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
SAB: My company Visual Wiz Studio Inc. is an award-winning creative studio specializing in Digital Imaging, Retouching, and CGI. With years of expertise in design, in 2020, I established my studio to help people bring their ideas into reality and elevate brands within the new advertising landscape.

FS: What is "design" for you?
SAB: For me, a design is a story converted to a very simple visual form. Design is created to spread communication.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
SAB: I love to discover creative designs, the ones that make you look at them for hours and wonder how attractive it has delivered the message.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
SAB: I ♥ NY logo is one of my favorite designs of all time. The innovative simplicity of the design always inspires me. The logo was designed in 1977 to increase tourism and raise the spirits of New Yorkers after the city's fiscal crisis. Milton Glaser designed/drew the logo with a red crayon on scrap paper in the back of a taxi. The original drawing is held in the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. The designer later revisited the emblem after the attacks of September 11, adapting it to say "I ♥ NY More Than Ever".

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
SAB: I designed a logo for a local company based in my city.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
SAB: I like the huge audience that social media has provided for digital advertising. It brings so many opportunities for designers and helps them get their designs noticed.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
SAB: I feel the most creative when I listen to music. It has a key role in my design process.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
SAB: I always seek creativity. That is the most important aspect of a design to me; to be creative.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
SAB: I feel I am a wizard who is transforming ideas into visual stories.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
SAB: I feel excited that my story has been heard. There is no feeling better than that.

FS: What makes a design successful?
SAB: I believe those kinds of designs that communicate with their audience are the winners

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
SAB: Creativity and originality are the most aspects I consider for judging a design.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
SAB: I think designers must tell their stories through visual designs in a way to connect with people's emotion

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
SAB: Unfortunately, as in many other fields, AI is taking over human society. If we don't control AI in the future, it will be a real threat to us in every field, as well as humanity

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
SAB: My last exhibition was held in Tehran, Iran in 2017. I would love to arrange an exhibition in NY in the coming year.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
SAB: Listening to music is an excellent source of inspiration for me. Discovering other designers' creative works on social media platforms is also an effective way to feed my creativity.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
SAB: Simplicity is key, and that is a major role in the style of my designs. Vivid and saturated colors are also an inseparable part of my style in design.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
SAB: I live in Isfahan, Iran. Isfahan is known as the city of culture and art in Iran. Despite that, I usually try not to let cultural heritage affect my design unless it is asked by my Iranian clients. I believe design should speak in a universal language.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
SAB: My design process starts with researching the competitors and studying similar projects I will get a better understanding of the market. Then it is time to brainstorm and conceptualize an idea. I do some rough sketches to come up with the best idea and discuss it with my team/client. I ask my clients for confirmation to finalize the concept. Afterward, I go to the final step which is an improvement. By gathering all information, feedback, and analyses, I continue to develop and improve my design as much as possible to achieve the best possible result.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
SAB: 1- Harman/Kardon Aura Studio speaker 2- Apple Mac Book Pro 2017 3- Mi Smart LED Desk Lamp 4- Gastroback 42534 Grill & Barbecue 5- Samsung Showcase Side-by-Side Refrigerator

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
SAB: It requires hard work to achieve success; there is no shortcut to it. I believe there are three steps we all should take to be successful. The first step is designing. Push yourself to design as much as you can, no matter if you do it for a client or do it as personal work. Try to discover the trending and inspiring works of other designers every day. And last but not least, never stop learning.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
SAB: Less is more!

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
SAB: Creativity, color theory, design software, networking, marketing, photography copywriting, and social media are the most important skills every designer should learn.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
SAB: There is always a piece of paper and a pencil next to me while I am working, so I could write down or draw whenever an idea comes to my mind. I mostly use Adobe Photoshop since it is a versatile software, and allows me to express my creativity faster without switching to other apps. I surf Behance website a lot, where I found it the best place to get inspiration from.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
SAB: I use my smartphone to manage my time by following the daily schedule I create inside my phone's calendar app. However, I try to put my cellphone on focus mode to minimize distractions and have more productive time while I am working.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
SAB: It depends on the project. It may take months to design a particular object, or sometimes I design something within an hour.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
SAB: "How long did it take you to design this" is the most frequently asked question, and my answer to that question is: it took me years of hard-working for to design this.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
SAB: Roamer, Maxxis, ELLE, Jaguar Watch, Kanda and FOCE.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
SAB: I enjoy working on projects that require visual communication designs. I love telling a story through visual content.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
SAB: I plan to teach more young designers because I think there is a time in every designer's life when you must give back what you have learned, and share your experience with others. I believe giving can change the world.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
SAB: I work either way, depending on the complexity of the project.

FS: How can people contact you?
SAB: https://abvisual.art
