Interview with Hanna Bajer, Pawel Sokol at Thursday 27th of October 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
HBPS: That is a easy question - yes! From more than 20 years with my wife we have an ID office in Poland and after we graduated to Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw we wanted to be an architects and do interiors :-)

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
HBPS: First Exitdesign, now we changed the name for our personal name - BAJERSOKOL - the name from our names. For over 20 years we made our style, and we choose our materials, details and colours - now it is our recognizable look. We are not so innovative studio, but we create cozy and luxurius interiors. We want to create space, when You can rest.

FS: What is "design" for you?
HBPS: Matter of humanity. Without sense of art we are only machines - so I think, without your own space with harmony and art You are not fully happy - You cannot be...

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
HBPS: All - full private interiors of houses or apartments are what we love to do - we love to create harmony, so all the details shoud work together, also furniture, or materials, or art - Fully designed interior can let you rest after work.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
HBPS: Hard to tell - BAJERSOKOL has very visible style - and we try to create very individual but "our" interior. So every client have his own memories, details, art or pictures, and it makes is individual - so every each project is new one to make. But still in our style :-)

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
HBPS: Small butique - what is interesting - it is still open, and client didn't change a thing... and still looks fine.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
HBPS: All what is natural - wallpapers, wood, marble, limestone... We hate visible ugly stuff, so we must hide all what is not decorative in our project.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
HBPS: In the silence... somewhere out of the office - it can be foreign city, or forrest, or gallery... At work is ...work. So hard to have enough space to design.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
HBPS: Harmony - always - it is the most important - to create space filled with stuff but all must be designed and or shown, or hidden - all must work together.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
HBPS: calm... It cannot be rush, I hate to make a design for "yesterday"

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
HBPS: Mostly - satisfaction - 90% of our projects we do in whole process, so we have a control on everything, and we try to deliver it like a visualisation to our client. What we do not like is to give anly the plans to the client and look how he do it by himself - mostly it doesn't look good - than we feel like a waste of time to prepare such project.

FS: What makes a design successful?
HBPS: Cooperation and understanding - mostly our clients belive in our process, so we can finish it like we plan and designed it - so it makes it completed.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
HBPS: The same word - harmony. All should match and fit :-)

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
HBPS: I hate when people throw out new stuff, only becouse they have a year or two... We make not fashionable interiors, so people feel good in them long time, and use them normaly. We hate fake products, fake materials, so we do not put them in our projects.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
HBPS: I hope - 2nd hand - reuse, and recycle.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
HBPS: As a ID we do not have private exhibitions, and we do not plan such.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
HBPS: Just like I said - we are not so innovate designers - so we define the design of BAJERSOKOL like we like it, and what we feel the best - nature, harmony, calm,

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
HBPS: Like above - once again harmony, luxury, cosy, high quality, timeless.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
HBPS: Poland - capital city - Warsaw. It is hard to search for our national design. Not in interiors - so our is universal one :-)

FS: How do you work with companies?
HBPS: We have many friends in our industy - many dealers, producers, designers - we work with then all the time and it is good family of our design.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
HBPS: All of us are profesionals in our field, so without understanding and respect none of us will work well. So must cooperate to deliver good project to our client.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
HBPS: Like I said - mostly 90% of our interiors we deliver fully finished, so we start from drawing the plans, than 3d visualisations, than technical drawings, moodboards, pricelists, and after finishing the project we coordinate to finish full interior to our client.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
HBPS: art, art, art, art, and some Eames furniture.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
HBPS: Coffee, work, work, work, walk with our dog Zora, tennis, red vine with out friends, some tv series... and sleep.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
HBPS: Tik-Tok won't work for a long time. The most important is to be honest with yourself and for a loooong time be consequent!

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
HBPS: Negative - I don't see them. Positive - You create the beauty! You make the world less borring.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
HBPS: harmony :-)

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
HBPS: See The World different - Your way. New way!

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
HBPS: Some time ago - it was the pinterst, but now - more and more I know what we feel, so the inside feeling is the most important.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
HBPS: After 20 years NOW we have a time to stop and slowdown, but there must be a hard work first. Now we have a good clients, and very good team - it easier.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
HBPS: 4-12 months. We talk about an apartment or house.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
HBPS: PRICE, and WHEN - I hate them?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
HBPS: Very difficult clients - very complicated interiors - hard details - I love them.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
HBPS: One of the most wealthy polish citizens. Not famous :-)

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
HBPS: Now - technical drawings - we have a new blood in our office responsible for the look and new design - I love to solve them and make them happend

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
HBPS: House in Italy - That is IT!

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
HBPS: We have a small but very high quality team of 12 people.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
HBPS: Not... Few, but all of them will be beautifull to show and prise :-)

FS: How can people contact you?
HBPS: By email: pawel@bajersokol.pl is the best way.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
HBPS: After this 20 years of work and creating BAJERSOKOL we made one of the best design offices in Poland, and we have a lot of projests in other countries - so we love to work and create "our" projects. NJOY.
