Interview with Lei Xiao

Home > Designer Interviews > Lei Xiao

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Lei Xiao (LX) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Lei Xiao by clicking here.

Interview with Lei Xiao at Tuesday 31st of May 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
LX: I have been studying art painting in the studio in Beijing since the age of 16. At the age of 18, I began to study industrial design and product brand related courses in the school of design of Jiangnan University, and successfully obtained a bachelor's degree. At the same time, I continued to study for a master's degree in the school. In the process of my growth, I have experienced many architectural design projects, which made me interested in the profession of designer at the earliest. Until now, I have been exploring the road of design.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
LX: Our studio is called Echo co studio (sea and Jingchuan), which was founded in 2018. Through cooperation with five designers also from Chongqing, China, we are committed to integrating the latest digital technology with traditional Chinese cultural elements and creating scientific and technological products representing Chinese style. Since its establishment, the studio has won more than 30 design awards and provided creative design services for enterprises including Chang'an automobile.

FS: What is "design" for you?
LX: In my opinion, design is a process of creating new things. This new thing needs to be considered how to make our world better, and this process needs more users to participate. Design itself is the process of creating new life.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
LX: I like works that integrate traditional culture with the latest technology. They must be beautiful, practical and of sustainable value. I hope to realize the rebirth of traditional culture through technical support.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
LX: My favorite design is the wall mounted radio of Japanese designer Naoto Kanazawa. I think his work is a work that combines technology, culture, usage habits and experience. I believe many people are familiar with it.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
LX: The first work I designed for the company was a tea package.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
LX: I like to use wood, polished recyclable plastic and other materials to achieve a sustainable concept.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
LX: I think creativity comes from time to time, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, and sometimes late at night. As long as I have some new ideas, I will feel like finding something to record.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
LX: In the design process, I pay more attention to a degree of coordination among product functions, shapes, colors and materials. In the whole creation process, I always think that detailed data and logical analysis are very important. My users' participation in the design process is also regarded as a key link, which helps the final appearance of the product.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
LX: When I was designing, I always took an exploratory curiosity and enjoyed the whole creative process.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
LX: When my design is realized, I will show it to my partners at the first time, and look for an inner sense of achievement in the process of joint evaluation. However, this sense of achievement is not unilateral, from which I will constantly accept new ideas and opinions to make the design better.

FS: What makes a design successful?
LX: I think the success of a design work is inseparable from the understanding of the design itself and the detailed analysis of user data. A successful design work must bring some good changes to some aspect of the world.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
LX: To judge a good design, I first consider whether the function of the design can solve the problems that need to be changed. Then we will comprehensively consider its aesthetics, comfort of experience, whether it is green on a certain level of symbol, whether it is sustainable, etc.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
