Interview with Terrance Su at Monday 28th of February 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
TS: I've studied fashion in Toronto Ontario, when the last semester of graduation I was found a trading company is called YGM, and I worked for one of their brand is called Aquascutum of London. After working for YGM, I realized that being a designer is what I passion about and I do really making designs and share all my emotions and sending a positive thinking to people.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
TS: My design studio is baed on men's and women's wear such as ready to wear and gowns. Our main target is high-end consumers and celebrities in Taiwan.

FS: What is "design" for you?
TS: In my point of view of design is about "emotion" when a design comes with a strongly story or emotion it will encourage people in many things.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
TS: I like all types of design but if I have to list one it will be concert outfits for singers because the design must be bold and unique. Sometime singers have to quick change so versatile and foundational design will be the important consideration for them.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
TS: MY favorite design will be the design that is being nominated on A Design Award. By10 years of my design career, it is the most design that brings out my inner emotion and the story behind is quite powerful and touching.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
TS: When I design for a company or a brand, I will start doing a research and find their brand DNA to understand what's the story behind so I will get the idea to develop products for them.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
TS: I feel the most creative is that when you make something comes with all your own stories.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
TS: Besides being creative, I am more focus on creating a slimming effect. Making a design to look pretty on a model is easy but I think it is not only to make a model beautiful, my target of clients probably not as skinny as models. If I can combine those two together it will be a best design for me.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
TS: I usually design each piece starts from my stories such as each stage of age and mood. I get inspired through those emotions to represent all pieces.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
TS: I am always satisfied when my designs are realized? I do enjoy sharing my works to everyone and make them inspired by looking at my designs.

FS: What makes a design successful?
TS: A successful design must has a strong message without describing words. People are subjective sometimes which the first impression pops up is how a designer present his/her works, so then a successful piece must come with a stroge emotion to bring up its story for people.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
TS: To me a design should not be judged as bad and good. On the other hand, we should look into the story behind the design and see if we can get inspired by looking at the design.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
TS: The responsibilities of a designer for society and environment is how a designer sending a positive thinking by creating his/her works and encourage people.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
TS: In my point of view, design field in tend to practice environment protection, and we have to reduce waste which is say no to fast fashion pollution.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
TS: My last exhibition was last July 2021 in Taiwan and hopefully I can have my next exhibition Internationally as soon as possible.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
TS: My design inspiration comes from my daily life, I spend most of time to do meditation to get the understanding myself. I also do charity to experience different lives this is is quite important for me. I used to donate money; however I was told by someone, what if I try too donate foods or unwanted clothes to someone who needs is much better than donating money and I can experience different lives at the moment. So it's become the most my design inspiration comes from.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
TS: My design style combines confident elements, strongly colour contrast, and simple cutting. Everything must starts 'simple'. When people wear my design they become "themselves" the confidence is inside out.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
TS: I actually live in Taiwan; however I'd studied fashion in Canada. It was a bit struggle for me to bring western design element and concept to Asia, but it was just for the very beginning because Taiwan has a different view of designing products. I've trying to combine those two different cultural heritages together and it is going to be a different sparks.

FS: How do you work with companies?
TS: Before I start working with a company, I usually do some research of the company and find the brands DNA before designing products for them. This is quite important for a design to work with different companies.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
TS: The key point for a company to work with a designer is that the company has to understand what the designer is strong at and what is the design advantage, value, and the company has to describe brand DNA clearly to make the designer more understand the design direction.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
TS: My design process is to think about what my theme is going to be and do more researches as much as I can such as attending art exhibitions or walking around to look streets building. These will help me to get my inspiration very quickly. After that, I will start sketching and doing pattern making and sample making before sending to my sample room to pattern maker and sewers.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
TS: I usually do meditation after I wake up and play music, making coffee before working.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
TS: I think my suggestion for young and desIgners is that try to get the imagination run wild not only focus on drawing or designing. There is a lot of interesting things happen in life and try to experience life as much as possible.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
TS: from my perspective being a designer, the positive way is that I am happy to share all my designs with positive thinking to public. Negative side is sometimes I stuck on the mood or story I try to make and can't walk out of the theme.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
TS: Zero error of designing and a strong message of a design.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?

TS: I like all type of design, but if I have to list one it will be the concert outfits for singers because those outfits must be unique, and bold. Sometimes signers need to do quick change so the design must be versatile and functional. It is such a big challenge for me every time.
