Interview with Yiu Chung Chan at Monday 30th of May 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
YCC: I have been packaging designer 4 years, I love creating and drawing. So I hope use my talent be my life career skill.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
YCC: My company main business is package factory, they focus on producing and innovate new package box to clients.

FS: What is "design" for you?
YCC: "Design" to me mean is changing the world and giving people new perspectives or helping.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
YCC: Packaging and Graphic design at this moment.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
YCC: This one " The Heaven Lost",because that project started from zero.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
YCC: The first thing design is a poster as the exhibition promote for company.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
YCC: my favorite material is Eco-friendly paper that is include a lot process with producing , it is art for me.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
YCC: When i was student at primary school, I would draw anything even while I was studying.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
YCC: Must new and unique design.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
YCC: mad at myself for making the design less than perfect.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
YCC: nothing is perfect but I can try to made it best for me or clients.

FS: What makes a design successful?
YCC: Insist on design is important.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
YCC: The design idea, the design story and the design let me change something.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
YCC: I think as an responsibilities of designer who have to bring positive meaning from the design.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
YCC: The future of design is all category focus on one designer and digitize.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
YCC: My last exhibition in 2019 Hong Kong, it is my company's exhibition to promote watches package.if i have opportunity , I want hold the exhibition on 2025 as my first personal exhibition.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
YCC: The design inspiration come from my life experience and sometime will take a look design awards websites. I think my design is primary level with other design.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
YCC: I just say it is adventurous, maybe someone like or anybody don't. As I before said that my design style is unique design and hope people get some meaning thought design.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
YCC: I live in Hong Kong, as a finance city, people focus on efficiency which that the design would don't have enough time to do research and analyst. So, as a designer of Hong Kong, I need update my knowlege any time any where.

FS: How do you work with companies?
YCC: I design a new package box and graphic, also I would made catalogs or leaflet to my company.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
YCC: I suggest the companies should give the space and time to designer, no pressure. as a good designer , must insist on design love it.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
YCC: First I would create the story to the design then follow my story to do research and what elements will use, after that I finish my design base on my research and what element i use

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
YCC: lamp, table , chair , computer , sofa

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
YCC: usually I walk exhibition , work and search what I get from the exhibition with staff or friends .

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
YCC: I have no any commit , because I am young designer too

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
YCC: In positives, designer will explore their life and can learn a lot of new knowledge. In negatives, designer is a special job, if you want your design be good, you may spent a lot of time on it.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
YCC: Insist on Design, Love it, because if you love it, you not feel tired and unhappy when you are working.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
YCC: Create skill , and your personal style. computer skill and handwork skill is important too but how to use depending designer mind.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
YCC: for me , I usually use Adobe Photoshop , illustration, solidwork and keyshort.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
YCC: I will set the time line and give the deadline for myself, if don't the design would never be done.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
YCC: depend on the design complex, some 1 week, some 1 month

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
YCC: I am often asked about the different with idea and concept.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
YCC: in my study period , I were been social designer as an intern which to redesign a whole funeral at sea event, and I design to how to reduce the pollution with sea . as the details I chose the paper can be break down on the sea which I did many research on internet. I found out one of a brand new plastic sachet and packaging made from seaweed, edible bio-plastic that is good to reduce the pollution with the sea. at the end, base on the material is not common, the budget will increase, so my concept didn't accepted.
