Interview with Lihsing Wang at Friday 18th of March 2022

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
LW: I have a master's degree in Industrial design from Pratt Institute and a bachelor's degree from National Taiwan University same major. I was born in a family full of art and design, my father who is also an Industrial designer influenced me a lot, and my mother is an oil painter artist taught me how art can shape the world.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
LW: Lihsing Wang's design studio started from 2018

FS: What is "design" for you?
LW: To me, "Design" is the thing that made life easier and happier.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
LW: "Creative"

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
LW: James Dyson's products.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
LW: Homeware

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
LW: PLA/3D printing

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
LW: Every moment.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
LW: Interesting

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
LW: I have very mixed emotions when I design. It very depends on the design I'm working on.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
LW: Release.

FS: What makes a design successful?
LW: Hard work, talents, and "luck".

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
LW: People are still using this design for many years or even generations, the timeless classic design.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
LW: Every design needs to have a purpose.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
LW: Digital making

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
LW: 2021- 40 x 40 International Design Exhibition Istanbul

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
LW: Everywhere.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
LW: Futuristic, humor, contemporary.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
LW: I was born in Taiwan now living in New York.

FS: How do you work with companies?
LW: Work hard and don’t give up

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
LW: There's no easier way except keep trying and never give up.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
LW: Every design is unique and so do the process.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
LW: All designs at my home are my favorite.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
LW: " Hello World :) "

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
LW: Work hard and play harder.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
LW: There are no negatives after being a designer.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
LW: Design useful things.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
LW: Empathy.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
LW: Rhino 3D, Grasshopper, Fusion360, 3D printers.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
LW: I always write a to-do list and estimate finishing time before digging into work.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
LW: Hard to say, it can be from 1 min to a lifetime.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
LW: How much is it?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
LW: Every experience of works is important.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
LW: The Sample Room NYC, Tory Burch.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
LW: Sketching.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
LW: A series of new HomeGoods design sales is coming up next year, let's keep in touch.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
LW: Both.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
LW: Can't tall for now.
