Interview with Rutchevelle Cerera Den Ouden at Tuesday 15th of March 2022 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? RCDO: I've always love anything about art but wayback when I was young I was more into fine arts, arts and crafts. Although I already start admiring interior design as well when my father start planning our house. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? RCDO: I don't have a company or studio but I am freelancing. FS: What is "design" for you? RCDO: Interior Design for me is not simply creating a beautiful and functional spaces but an integration of our own way of living. Rather than changing our daily lifestyle; ways, personalities or likes to make our dream home but instead let the design suits us and bring a personal approach to create a home to love. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? RCDO: Interior residential designs. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? RCDO: I don't really have a particular favourite but I'm quite attracted to biophilic, wabi-sabi, any mix of contemporary& modern, industrial and minimalism. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? RCDO: I made a redesign concept visualisation for my sister's retail studio. The " Creativly Studio", showroom store for Rachel Arts Co. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? RCDO: Currently I am in Homestyler. FS: When do you feel the most creative? RCDO: When I am inspired, which is mostly when I see an empty space and ideas comes flowing. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? RCDO: When designing I focus definitely first the needs of the client and how they use the space to make a an efficient layout before I completely start the interior design or the 3D models. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? RCDO: I'm excited always. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? RCDO: I believe if one of my visualisation be will be realized then it will be such an achievement and satisfying feeling. FS: What makes a design successful? RCDO: When it caters to the clients need and much more benefits that they have asked but grateful to receive. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? RCDO: In my visualisation, to know if it good or not, I firstly consider always in accordance to what is required in the room, how the floor flow in that room and visually appealing at the same time. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? RCDO: To create spaces that doesn't makes an impact to environment in harmful during the process and maintenance. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? RCDO: It is evolving as the need to adopt to the pandemic situation. I believe the future of interior designs will continue and keep developing space that gives consideration of reducing risk or eliminating risk for in regards to current situation and be proactive as to what may come along the way. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? RCDO: If I have/had any exhibition and if I would be holding one I probably will be doing for either for my Arts (Digital & Fine arts) and Interior Visualisation/Realisations. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? RCDO: It really starts from the person/client to be able to deliver space that brings out the best of themselves. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? RCDO: Personalising spaces came really a passion due to my own experience with rental spaces as they don't really have the room flow and layout that way you go about your day on that space so it wasn't always effective. You always end up trying to make it fit your way so I realised that it could be what other missed even they have beautiful homes yet they end not really loving it. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? RCDO: I am currently living in Bahrain but I am from Philippines. The cultural roots of both countries doesn't really affects my designs but just help me more in gaining understanding of places differences. FS: How do you work with companies? RCDO: Professionalism and great communication is key. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? RCDO: I do suggest that ask for sample visualisation work for their project or comes up a brief closer to the project so you could see which designer have the eye of design that represent your company more and deliver an efficient proposal. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? RCDO: I have a design discussion with the client from which I will use as reference to make the design board, material& colour plan, initial layouts then 3d build for final interior designing. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? RCDO: For a home space, my 5 favourite items would the seating, art, rugs, plants and lighting. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? RCDO: Nothing more than ordinary. I make my visualisations at home so it's a mix of tackling family and designing or painting. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? RCDO: Be persistent, continue learning and don't settle for just a beautiful work but make sure beneficial factor to client. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? RCDO: As virtual interior designer/decorator positive would be a remote position and negative not everyone really realise the need or understand the scope of it, in terms of client perspective. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? RCDO: Personalised design and think of it as hospitality service too, not only when engaging with clients but when creating your designs. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? RCDO: Creativity, innovative, understanding the use of space and needs, communications, flexible, fast learner and moral character FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? RCDO: For my 3d Visualisations I use homestyler mainly but I do use coohom and Chief architecture and for my arts currently I am using Autodesk sketchbook. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? RCDO: Yes it is time consuming, I set time frames per stages of designing. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? RCDO: It really depends on the scale and complexity of the project. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? RCDO: Most probably will be what I do? and the scope of my work? FS: What was your most important job experience? RCDO: When a client is surprised and admires your work because it really just means you achieve your goal. FS: Who are some of your clients? RCDO: I could mention the Creativly studio of Rachel Arts co. and other visualisation is private. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? RCDO: Interior design FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? RCDO: Hope to get more active in the field of interior and arts. To land in great projects and sell arts. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? RCDO: I develop by myself. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
