Interview with Jiwon Chong at Saturday 2nd of September 2023 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? JC: With a background in graphic and interaction design, my experience spans the tech, healthcare, and advertising industries. I specialize in brand identity, website design, art direction, and packaging design. I loved the way art could make me feel something, whether it was happy, sad, or excited. I love being a graphic designer because I get to use my creativity to solve problems and communicate ideas. I also enjoy the challenge of working with clients to understand their needs and create designs that meet their goals. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? JC: I am currently a Visual/UI Designer at Amazon, where I create and optimize web experiences and digital communications for the Workforce Staffing Owned Channels team. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? JC: I enjoy working on a variety of projects, each with its own challenges and rewards. I like the challenge of working with clients to understand their needs and create designs that meet their goals. I also like the creative process of coming up with new ideas and seeing them come to life. If I had to choose a few areas that I'm particularly interested in, I would say branding and packaging design. I think branding is an important way for businesses to communicate their identity and values to their customers. Packaging design is a great way to make products stand out on the shelf and to communicate their features and benefits. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? JC: I can talk about my two favorite projects. First one is the packaging design for Uniform Teeth. This project aimed to improve the usability of dental packaging kits that patients interact with throughout their teeth straightening journey. We listened to patients to address usability issues while also crafting a kit that is more enjoyable to interact with, featuring a sophisticated serif font and a refreshing color palette. It was rewarding that the Uniform Teeth packaging design won several prestigious awards, including the A' Design Award, Red Dot Awards, 100th Art Director's Club (ADC) Awards, 67th Type Directors Club Awards, GDUSA (Graphic Design USA), and more. I'm thrilled about what we achieved on this project. Second is commission from the Apple App Store team to create a Today tab card illustration to promote three financial apps. I enjoyed the process, from sketching by hand to experimenting with various color combinations and adding layers of detail to resonate with diverse genders, races, and age groups in the audience. The card was selected by Apple's marketing team for the new App Store in the iOS 11 promotional video, which reached an audience of 155 countries worldwide. It was a fantastic experience, and I'm proud to have been part of it. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? JC: I keep the user in mind when designing. I want to create designs that are easy to use and understand, and that meet the user's needs. I also take into account the design's purpose and what message it intends to convey. Lastly, my aim is to craft visually appealing designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also leave a positive impression.
