Interview with Lai Jiebin at Thursday 9th of November 2023

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
LJ: I have had a strong interest in art since I was young, and I enjoy painting, sculpture, and handicrafts. As I grow older, I realize that art is not just a personal expression, but also a way to communicate and interact with others. So, I began to explore and express my understanding and ideas about urban space through art. In the process of learning, I came into contact with public art, which fascinated me. Public art not only has aesthetic value, but also can bring vitality and cultural atmosphere to urban space. I want to create art works that can interact and exchange with the public through my own efforts, injecting new vitality and vitality into urban spaces. As a public art designer, I feel very lucky and proud. My job is to improve urban space through artistic means and provide citizens with a beautiful life experience. I am able to create a more beautiful, comfortable, and cultural environment for the city through my own efforts and creativity.

FS: What is "design" for you?
LJ: My design works cover multiple fields and types, including sculpture, installations, public facilities, environmental art, and cultural activities, aiming to improve the urban environment and public quality of life through art and design. My design emphasizes innovation and experimentation, while also focusing on functionality and practicality, hoping to contribute to the development and progress of the city.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
LJ: A public sculpture or installation

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
LJ: As a public art designer, I enjoy many design types and styles because each design has its unique charm and value.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
LJ: In the middle of the night when nobody is quiet

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
LJ: Artistic, public and people oriented

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
LJ: Happy and peaceful

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
LJ: Satisfaction and happiness

FS: What makes a design successful?
LJ: Think clearly why to do this design, for whom to design, how to achieve the design purpose, and then seriously do the design process, and finally carefully analyze the completed design

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
LJ: Thought, space, margin, subtraction, scale, density, orientation

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
LJ: As the main body of design creation, designers' design must be used to improve people's living conditions and environment, and create better living conditions and combined services for people“ "Design for the benefit of mankind" is not only the requirement of society for designers, but also the lofty social responsibility of designers

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
LJ: The design will be more based on the "human" operation system itself, focusing on sustainability and regeneration. The designer will have to become a psychologist, not only to meet the functional needs, but also to meet the emotional needs,

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
LJ: Life, everything around us and social problems

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
LJ: I don't put too much emphasis on my own style, but rather create public art of its own style for every city
