Interview with Perelman Daniel at Tuesday 27th of April 2021
Daniel Perelman
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
PD: Since I was a child I loved to build things and combine all kinds of objects, I used to paint especially on large canvases. In high school, I studied architecture and wanted to be an architect. After the military, I went to see the industrial design program at the university and that was the turning point I wanted to be a designer.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
PD: After 10 years working as a designer & project manager for several design firms in Israel. In 2016 I established my studio that focuses on industrial design, design thinking, and Branding, with the desire to seek new materials, shapes, esthetics, and functionality.

FS: What is "design" for you?
PD: Design is the desire to create something better that impact the people who use it

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
PD: I love design lifestyle consumer products with my twist and, I also love to create an environmental design that has an impact on the surrounding.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
PD: My favorite design is one of my student projects which is an interactive outdoor bench. The concept of this bench derives from research based on communication and non - communication between people's behavior on public benches. My wish was to create an outdoor bench that could combine or separate its users and to make an interactive outdoor piece that will attract inhabitants to "play" and try it. And this interaction opens new possibilities for communication.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
PD: The first project I designed and went into production was a home thermostat, for a small company that competed with large companies that specialize in that field. The project was sold in home depot stores in Israel and was a good success.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
PD: I love all the material and always get excited about new materials I am not familiar with. I work a lot with plastic injections and always try to create special surfaces that are not trivial.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
PD: After I spend days without having a solution or inspiration for a particular problem and then once everything connects this the moment I feel creative.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
PD: After I realize the product's final configuration, I spend a lot of time on the right shape and the small details that make the difference.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
PD: I am feeling a complete detachment from the outside world and I feel my inner peace working.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
PD: I feel joy and personal satisfaction that all the hard work paid off.

FS: What makes a design successful?
PD: Successful design is the whole package of intuitive user experience, with the right shape that fits the product functionality, reliability, and attractive look.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
PD: At first according to the aesthetic and attractive appearance of the product and then I test whether it fits its purpose.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
PD: To solve problems, with an extreme focus on the user’s minutest concern. And take advantage of technology to allow minimal ecological damage.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
PD: I think the field of design is evolving and moving to 3D printers and automation for everyday use, and DIY, this is the future.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
PD: I never had my own exhibition and I don't plan on in the future.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
PD: My source of inspiration can reach from everywhere and anytime. First I write down many ideas and then go back to examine them late at night when I have complete silence and great music.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
PD: My design must be functional first. Then I tend to make a modern clean and simple design that stimulates emotions at first glance.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
PD: I live in Israel in a city near TLV. As a start-up nation, people here have very creative ideas, but they like everything quickly and not always appreciate the time required to develop a proper product, and it would be nice if there were more big manufacturers in our country in the fields of textile, ceramics, and coatings, etc.

FS: How do you work with companies?
PD: On the project basis and initial cost estimate for the development and all stages concerning the process needed.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
PD: First, they need to see if they like the designer's work, and then they have to trust him and let him finish his development process stages, and let him lead, that why they took him.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
PD: Each project starts with extensive research and analysis of similar products, then I play with the configurations to get the best product structure, to match the product functionality, then I start the appearance sketches that will lead the product styling, including seek new materials, esthetics and then we start programing and prototyping the product with a focus on manufacturing feasibilities.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
PD: I love my design book, Magazines, A table watch by LEXON, Air plan sit from the '80s.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
PD: Wake up around 9:00, I drink two coffee, then on the phone, till 13:00 manage the vendors and update clients about the project status, start to create up to 19:00, at 21:00 I am thinking on my next day missions.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
PD: Always to keep doing what they like and, not to treat your profession as a day job.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
PD: Positive: I'm never bored, Negative: It's very intense.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
PD: Always follow your instinct.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
PD: Be creative and a pusher.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
PD: I am still learning.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
PD: It can take a month and sometimes a year and more.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
PD: How long it takes? And how much it cost?
