Interview with Hwajin Jo at Monday 23rd of March 2020 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? HJ: I was actually a software engineer, but I've realized I'm interested in visualization and beautiful color combinations. When I studied Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop after working, I made a logo for my sister's business as an exercising. I got a request to make a logo from someone after my sister's logo. That was my turning point. I've found that I love finally. Logo design is a starting point to visualize the invisible brand concept and compact combination of a word mark, symbol, and colors. I feel it like a total gift set. The harder I design the more I paint as fine art due to thirst to use colors freely. That's why I do both art and design. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? HJ: My company is a one-man company. I do art and design, especially branding/logo design. FS: What is "design" for you? HJ: Design is to help others by visual solution, and this is how to love others. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? HJ: Logo Design FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? HJ: I like minimal design by Dieter Rams and Hara Kenya. Their designs look like simple, but all functions work. I think it is essential. As for motivation, I love Bae Sangmin's design to help others. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? HJ: My sister's logo is my first project to me. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? HJ: I love paper because of analog emotion and warmth. FS: When do you feel the most creative? HJ: When I hang out with joy! FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? HJ: Something unique and field consideration FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? HJ: It's like a black hole. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? HJ: Wow! FS: What makes a design successful? HJ: Communication!Absolutely! FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? HJ: My client's satisfaction FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? HJ: I think to encourage consumption with a nice design is not design's role. To help others by design is real role. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? HJ: Area destruction between art and design FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? HJ: My paintings have joined London affordable art fair 11-15 March. Next exhibition.. A place to be FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? HJ: My inspiration is actually the Bible. It contains all wisdom. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? HJ: My design is minimal and sharp style. As I mentioned, the minimal designs by Dieter Rams and Hara Kenya are so impressive. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? HJ: I live in South Korea. The pro is language. I think communication is almost in design. When I communicate with someone, it is easy to grasp the purpose because I'm a Korean native. The con is conservativeness. FS: How do you work with companies? HJ: CEOs of new companies contact me due to their logo or branding to start business. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? HJ: A good communicator and a person who love the work because motivation is very important.. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? HJ: When there is a request to design, I have a meeting with the person in charge first and then the final arbiter for design selection. I get their requirements there and make draft proposals for several weeks that we contracted. There is a meeting again with the draft proposal to select one. Then the final design is selected and tuned if there is request to modify. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? HJ: A wood storage closet for stationery, a tin box, Stationery that I designed, clips, and a wood table FS: Can you describe a day in your life? HJ: It could be the last day! FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? HJ: Do not focusing on only design! Inspiration comes from everywhere. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? HJ: The positive is to see the realization of concepts, and the negative is to push to make the result because design is visual solution to help someone. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? HJ: Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? HJ: Communication and visualization FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? HJ: From a CEO of a one-man company to law firms.. It's various. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? HJ: Logo design! I love the visualization of unseen concept. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? HJ: Just forward one step and one step.. I do my best every moment. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
