Interview with keun young Shim at Wednesday 22nd of April 2020  FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? KYS: Childhood was brought up close to the local small town of rurality. The sound of nature is always by my side, wind, sunlight, bird sound, grass smell, soil smell.I am located inside me with memories and experiences of my back. They were enough to grow me up as an architect and designer who connected me with nature. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? KYS: We are a small-scale Atelier design studio. At the same time, not many projects are carried out, but with deep focus on each project through in-depth processes and research. It values nature, landscape, environment, climate and local context, and is constantly striving to capture concepts and philosophies that are close to nature and truth without being fad-oriented. FS: What is "design" for you? KYS: For me, design is life itself. All human beings live in everyday life doing design. However, as an architect and designer, the design that expresses and produces results should be based on timeliness and responsibility. It simply means that the spirit and the world behind the visually exposed design are even more important. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? KYS: Like capturing soil on the ground, I love the materiality of bricks that comb the soil. It captures the changes in time very naturally and I think it also exists as part of the environment. FS: When do you feel the most creative? KYS: Even if we don't use various materials or special details, we feel creative energy when we feel the differentiated atmosphere and dignity in the space we created. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? KYS: Focus on space, architecture, and sustainability as a language that permeates naturally. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? KYS: I feel alive when I do design. It's another story in the same context as Descartes talks about the nature of architecture. FS: What makes a design successful? KYS: There is no success or failure in design and space. If you just feel the serenity of beauty and mind through someone's experiences and emotions, it's just doing its part.
